Bloggers Photo     Taking Stock...The Things That Matter Most.  I have always loved that title.  It will be the title of my forthcoming book of poetry as well.  If I ever get the time that is.  The first thing I want everyone to know on Poetry Soup is that I appreciate every single comment, critique and greeting.  I read them all and hope to respond to all in time.  The second thing is that my time is very limited right now between work and family.  I devote most my time to my family when I'm off work because, to be honest, without them much of my poetry would not exist.  I also put in a ton of hours at work teaching our young US Navy Sailors the combat skills they require to come back home to us.  I Love my job regardless of the hours!!
I was a sailor as well, and retired after my 20 years.  I have seen most of the world, met some of the most interesting people and lived the dream of a small town boy who wanted to see the world.
I am from a small town...or should I say village.  I grew up in the Village of Woodson, IL  Woodson had but 300 homespun souls that would do anything for you and tell everyone about it.  Everyone knew everyone and everyone waved know matter they knew you or not.
Most summers were spent on Grandma's farm which was a magical place for an imaginative boy who wanted to travel.  I would hop in the old rusted cars that littered the farm and pretend drive my way across the world.  I have written several works about my Grandma and her farm.  She is inspirational to me.  On her way to the century mark now...I Love Marian Stock dearly!
Thank you all for reviewing and I will review when I can...Kevin sends

Kevin's Interview....Part One

When did you first start writing poetry and what got you started?

To be honest, I don't remember exactly when I started writing poetry.  I do know that I was still in grade school I have hand written poems from back then.  I must say, my handwriting was terrible!  But at least they're hand written, I can't tell you the last time I actually wrote anything by hand that was of length.  All computerized now!  I pretty much kept every single poem I wrote from back then, all the way through about 1995 or so I'd say.  I have them all in a file, in my desk...waiting.  I say waiting because most are not done, nor anywhere near what I'd be willing to publish.  They are first drafts, raw, ideas really more than poetry.  To steal a quote, "Poetry is never finished, just abandoned"!!  So, needless to say I've been writing rhymes for many years, 30+ I'd guestimate.
My answer to the second part of this question is essentially the same as the first.  I truly do not know what caused me to start writing poetry nor why!  If I had to guess I would say it was a school assignment.  I remember several english assignments regarding poetry back then.  I don't think they teach poetry much anymore, and if so, what a shame.  My children have not done a single poetry assignment that I'm aware of.  I know that I started really writing poetry with a purpose when I was in high school.  I got in to it on my own, but was bolstered from the reactions the girlfriends in my life at the time gave me.  They seemed to really like it, so of course, I liked it even more.  Sorta like the guy who picks up a guitar to get the ladies.  I was kind of a big deal to steal another saying!  The older I got, the more I grew to love writing on it's merit and not any other selfish reasons.  I hope I bring something to the craft.  I hope I honor the long line of those who forged the path I now follow!

I'm actually doing a self interview for I'm going to be their guest blogger soon and these are questions they'll be asking. Since I've never thought about it...I figured I needed to actually sit down and come up with some decent answers. Constructive critism welcomed!! ;-)

I remember writing poems for my girlfriend to give to their boyfriends back in my early teens. I did not start writing again tell 05-so it took me many years before I started again. My present day girlfriends liked the poems in their birthday cards and said I was good at writing so I began to write. I now have pieces of paper with words lying around the house. It has become my hobby and as for my husband and two sons they just turn up their noses and tell me it's a waste of time. I get pleasure out of writing and found many friends on the soup who do too. Welcome aboard mate. Phyl
