Cyndi MacMillan is a well-rounded writer who embraces many genres and forms. Her work has been published in local newspapers and has won contests. She enjoys reading literary journals, and she is actively pursuing poetry publication.

Verse is both magnetic and kinetic; poetry must share her attention since she also writes short stories, and she is knee-deep in her novel-in-progress, the Trim of Wicks

Regardless of genre, she focuses on language. One word has the power to repel or pull. She never forgets the reader and does her best to make their ride interesting.

She lives in a small town in Ontario with her husband, young daughter and far too many books.

HELP! I Have a fundraising idea for the PHILIPPINES... HOW DO I DO THIS???

Blog Posted:11/14/2013 10:47:00 PM
Hi Guys.

It's late and I've been "hearing" that heart-voice again. You know that thought that just keeps tapping at your shoulder, constantly nudging you to DO SOMETHING?

Monday, I made sandwiches for my husband (who works evenings) and we sat down to watch the noon news. I then began to cry as I saw what has become of Tacloban. I could not eat as I watched thousands of people crying for food, for water, for shelter. People with children in their arms... people who have lost everything, family, friends....

Those images I still carry.

I am not a wealthy woman. I live frugally and struggle most months to make ends meet... but I have a home, food in my fridge, a warm, dry bed, clean water to drink... my family is alive and well. I am blessed in a thousand ways.

So, MY IDEA?

I want to organize a

FAST FOR THE PHILIPPINES fundraising drive.

I want people in my community to join me in a 24 HOUR FAST, to get sponsors for this fast and then to give the money to a local agency that is collecting donations for this devastated area.

But all I have is the idea... I have no idea how to take this idea and make it happen.

How do I start? Who do I call? Has anyone ever done anything like this before???

These people have been without food for days. I want to demonstrate our empathy and show solidarity by fasting... it is just a token, I know, nothing compared to the starvation that these people are TRULY suffering... but it is a show of support and I am hoping that it will motivate people into giving ...

Can anyone out there give me some ideas?

I was thinking of calling the local paper (very very small, but well read, here) and speaking to the editor about putting a "call out" to see if anyone here would join me in my fundraising efforts.

I can't just sit by and do nothing.

I can't be a good mother and turn away from this.

I must show my girl that we can be the change we want to see.... that one person can make a small difference.

Please, share your thoughts,

Love to all
Cyndi

In the past, when I've witnessed something that captured my heart and called me to help in some way, I have found it best to do what may seem to be too little at the time, but start in a small way at home, first with involving my family, my friends, then neighbors, and community..it can snowball into enormous proportions. Our local newspaper, and TV stations catch wind of these small efforts makes all the difference.Once it gets out there, there is no stopping the help, inspiring others to do the same. If you are on Facebook..or any other sites.another way to spread the idea The important thing is, to do something, not be idle, expecting someone else to do what needs to be done. Good for you, Cyndi! But let's ALL do something!! Each of us can do something to make a difference!!!!

We have donated through a local charity. It's important to channel efforts eventually through a recommended charity for final delivery. American Red Cross, Americares, Catholic Relief Services, and Convoy of Hope are among the charities recommended by Charity Navigator for the Philippines relief effort. Perhaps a couple of these are available from Canada. You have a good heart as always.

Check with charity navigator. As far as your local effort goes start with your local media.
