Cyndi MacMillan is a well-rounded writer who embraces many genres and forms. Her work has been published in local newspapers and has won contests. She enjoys reading literary journals, and she is actively pursuing publication within their glossy covers.

Verse is both magnetic and kinetic. She attempts - madly- to give equal attention to her poetry, short stories, and a novel-in-progress, the Trim of Wicks.  Regardless of genre, she focuses on language. One word has the power to repel or pull. She never forgets the reader and does her best to make their ride interesting.

Poetry soup is a good forum which enables people from around the world to share poetry. It has some great resources and provides a nice space for friends to meet.

Cyndi lives in a small town in Ontario with her husband, young daughter and far too many books.

THE IRONY OF MY IGNORANCE--RE: BANGLADESH

Blog Posted:5/19/2013 7:15:00 AM

I am an idiot.

I’m not certain how or why, but I got it into my head that Bangladesh was a province of India, perhaps because I live in a country composed of provinces and my inadequate knowledge of world geography.

Bangladesh has been an independent country since before my father could spell his name!

Bangladesh, India and Pakistan are countries found on the Indian Subcontinent... for more information please click on this link:

Thank you to the kind Soupers who let me know of my error and treating me so kindly, seeing my intentions. Not a one of you mocked me or my blunder.

I have tried my best to fix the specifics of my tribute ‘contest’ and hope with my newest wording that I have not offended anyone! I was at a loss of what to do!

Canada is a large country that sits atop the USA, and I was one of those smug Canadians who would chuckle when I heard that some Americans believed we all lived in igloos, ate whale meat and said, “Eh?” after every sentence.

One of our popular comedians even had a segment on his tv show which poked at the Canadian myth and American opinion (sorry my American friends, only watch the following IF you have a sense of humour! No offence, lol, BY ME, intended)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAR9XYwL9iQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi1yhp-_x7A  (Canadian poking fun at Canadians!)

Now, here I was trying to highlight the significance of GLOBAL AWARENESS.

Think about that for a minute. Let that sink in.

Yup, here I am saying we need to be more aware of the world and other countries and didn’t have a freaking clue that the COUNTRY that I was highlighting was even a COUNTRY.

Irony.

Ignorance.

Hand in hand.

So, I’m going to spend some time LEARNING about the world this year.

It’s a new year’s resolution that I am beginning in May.

Blessing sent to everyone.

Thank you SO MUCH. And I am sorry if I offended anyone... especially those on soup who either have large enough hearts to just shake their heads and chuckle at the silly Canuck and/or who gave me the smallest tap on the shoulder and said, “ummm...Hey, Nice Lady...”

Love,
Cyndi

It's refreshing when someone admits they made a mistake. But you could always just say you want a tribute to any of those places in that part of the world. That was how I took it, Cyndi. To pay honor to any one them I chose to do. I hope that is what you meant. I will recheck your contest. Luv, Andrea

I feel your pain. :-( In a recent blog which was shared on fb, someone stated that Cape Town was the capital of Africa. lol.... I think that I am going to vote to change my country name to Azania (it has been seriously proposed recently in parliament) because people in general confuse SOUTH AFRICA (the country) with Africa (the continent). BTW Cape Town is just one of the three official capitals of South Africa and we are a member of the BRICS countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It is for trade and financial solidarity - so no small player any more :-) We rate AAA at the Word Bank, where the USA only rate AA after the Wall Street fiasco. I love the diversity of Canada

The few Canadians I have met through fb and tales from my family who had taught at some of the universities across Canada, it is a place worthy of admiration. Love, Su
