Cyndi MacMillan poetry has been published in The Fieldstone Review, Issue 2015 http://www.fieldstonereview.usask.ca/article.php?article=167, Grain Magazine, issue 42.4, Summer 2015, Passed Signs/New Fields  http://www.grainmagazine.ca/current-issue/  , The Steel Chisel, April 2016, http://www.thesteelchisel.ca/april2016_07.html.  She has poems forthcoming in ROOM and the Centrifugal Eye. She participated in the 20 Poem Challenge at The Ekphrastic Review: Writing and Art on Art and Writing, and twelve of her poems have been published by the journal.http://www.ekphrastic.net/apps/search?q=Cyndi+MacMillan.

Her fiction has appeared in local newspapers and has won contests. Her short story, Missed Steps, is forthcoming in the Windsor Review. She enjoys reading literary journals, and she is actively pursuing further publication within their glossy covers.

Verse is both magnetic and kinetic. She attempts - madly- to give equal attention to her poetry, short stories, and a novel-in-progress, the Trim of Wicks.  Regardless of genre, she focuses on language. One word has the power to repel or pull. She never forgets the reader and does her best to make their ride interesting.

Poetry soup is a friendly forum which enables people from around the world to share their writing. It has some great resources and provides a nice space for people to connect.

Cyndi lives in a small town in Ontario with her husband, young daughter and far too many books.

A LOVE LETTER TO INDIA... A TRIBUTE, FOUND ON THE CONTEST PAGE, update on pub songs

Blog Posted:5/14/2013 6:47:00 AM

I will be judging my pub song contest tonight..

____________________________________________

Write a poem

for  India

and/or

about  the peoples and culture of India.

This  is your love letter,
this can be a tribute
this  can be a prayer,
this can be a gleaming,

this can be a bridge,
this is also...

a  card of sympathy...

Please, dedicate your love letter to the people of  India and those who are now grieving a great, great loss.

On April  24 a building, which was not built to  code, crumbled in  India’s clothing district during an earthquake. Yesterday, the search for  their remains ended.

1,127 PEOPLE ..  LOST...

India is a land of beauty  and history, of gracious people, of art and spices. It is the most populace  democracy in the world, and suffers poverty, malnutrition and inadequate  healthcare.

India has known great  pain, before, but it also has great strength.

All  poems which reference India (the land, its culture, its people, its geography)  in a respectful and reverent manner will be given first place.

My own poem will be given an  honorable mention, so as to be included in this tribute.

Research India. Let what you learn fill your poem.

Your poem does not need to  reference the events of April 24th... How you show your love is up to you. And  please add any needed footnotes so the reader can fully understand your  poem.

I  ENCOURAGE all Soup poets who are from India to submit their poems in Bengali,  Hindi, Punjabi,  Tamil, other many other languages spoken in  India.  If you can include a translated version of your poem, I would be most  grateful.

I  hope these ideas inspire you...

Thank  you and namaste to all...

 My own example...

MADE IN BANGLADESH

Beloved, your ear is a small shell; I will whisper Om Namah Narayana
Beloved, our lovely daughter is too young to tell, Om Namah Narayana

You were water, my life, a spring from which I’ll never again draw
You were pure joy, my wife, again I moan, Om Namah Narayana

I will dress you in red for you were a ruby, even the sun set in awe,
I will live though I am dead; Lord Vishnu, I groan, Om Namah Narayana

Here, kneels the remains of a man, already despair has begun to gnaw
Here, my soul drains,  as I once more whimper, Om Namah Narayana

We will fight for change.. forever... forever... til every frozen heart thaws
And may those guilty ... never... oh, never....  hear Om Namah Narayana

* This is a very loose Ghazal... the rhyme scheme/syllable count is not true to the form, but it does have the voice of a Ghazal.

A good tribute to India. It is becoming much more difficult to maintain a decent level of conscious consumerism, because companies are "mix-matching" the products(shirt says: "Made in Canada", but the buttons are made in China, the white thread, in Thailand, the red thread, in Bangladesh, etc. As for trying to stay away from Chinese product, especially food, there's almost no way to do it, unless living like a wild person in the woods. This is a shame, because Chinese product is absolutely nasty in every way possible). For the religious category, Islam is huge in India; the second largest Muslim population(with over 110 million practicing Muslims in India)of any country, 2nd only to Indonesia. Since the 8th century, various areas of India have had Muslim rulers. India has also had two Muslim Presidents. The number of practicing Muslims in India, is almost 3 times the total population of Canada. India is fascinating....so is its diaspora.

Naw, you didn't sound like an enclopedia. I am truly trying to find my footing here... I'm by no means a shoppaholic, we buy what we need. But with young kids, they go through clothing FAST. I hope what FIRST comes of this is a awareness of global conditions... hugs. gotta fly!

My family falls a few thousand over the poverty line in Canada. I usually shop thrift, not only for the cost, but I like that I'm keeping stuff out of landfills and that the formaldehyde has been washed off the clothing. I have bought Joe Fresh... there is no SIMPLE solution, I'm a thinking. Cycle indeed.

Hmmm, I should almost apologize for 'sounding' like an encyclopedia up there. You brought up very pertinent points. Yes, does boycotting hurt the average worker? Here's another intriguing angle. In the West there is a lot of advocacy, such as: "Those poor Indians making clothing for the 'rich', under such deplorable conditions! This must stop!" But if asking an Indian worker, many will say how grateful they are to work in said company(in the deplorable conditions), and how they wish the westerners would shut their mouths and let the business boom. ! Uggh. Wot a vicious cycle....

THANKS! Awk! I needed to research that better. Appreciate it, Chum. I am so at a loss ... truly... to boycott, doesn't it hurt the average worker? Am I forcing layoffs, further suffering, hunger, homelessness? Am I truly strong-arming the powers that be? TORN! I have no idea what is right! Your thoughts are VERY welcome!
