Cyndi MacMillan poetry has been published in The Fieldstone Review, Issue 2015 http://www.fieldstonereview.usask.ca/article.php?article=167, Grain Magazine, issue 42.4, Summer 2015, Passed Signs/New Fields  http://www.grainmagazine.ca/current-issue/  , The Steel Chisel, April 2016, http://www.thesteelchisel.ca/april2016_07.html.  She has poems forthcoming in ROOM and the Centrifugal Eye. She participated in the 20 Poem Challenge at The Ekphrastic Review: Writing and Art on Art and Writing, and twelve of her poems have been published by the journal.http://www.ekphrastic.net/apps/search?q=Cyndi+MacMillan.

Her fiction has appeared in local newspapers and has won contests. Her short story, Missed Steps, is forthcoming in the Windsor Review. She enjoys reading literary journals, and she is actively pursuing further publication within their glossy covers.

Verse is both magnetic and kinetic. She attempts - madly- to give equal attention to her poetry, short stories, and a novel-in-progress, the Trim of Wicks.  Regardless of genre, she focuses on language. One word has the power to repel or pull. She never forgets the reader and does her best to make their ride interesting.

Poetry soup is a friendly forum which enables people from around the world to share their writing. It has some great resources and provides a nice space for people to connect.

Cyndi lives in a small town in Ontario with her husband, young daughter and far too many books.

SOUP NEWSLETTER - OCT 12 2012

Blog Posted:10/12/2012 6:37:00 AM

You do not put yourself into your writing,

you find yourself there

                                     Alan Bennett

Don’t you love it when someone pokes and prods, throws back the curtain? When a poet looks closer, deeper at a subject, carefully considers irony or sees a similarity that few may notice, a poem can be born. After all, don't poems show up in odd places?

I have a poem on the backburner about a plastic surgery clinic which was established in a historical building, an old Italianate, which has won an award for being well maintained. Get it? Yeah, I knew YOU would. I stood there and laughed by myself, took a few pictures that may show up in a short blog one day (I so too can do short! LOL!)

Poets write for hundreds of reasons, some to turn tables, some to right them. Some see humor and drama in the same rite of passage scene or view a universe in one rain drop.

I say let’s encourage what we can. Let the pen’s sharp nib point and then travel. Learning is never a straight line. It bends, paces, thins in spots, blots occasionally.

Here are two poets new to soup who wowed me. One boldly retold a story and one stuck out a tongue ( should I dare say it?) in the most ‘cheeky’ manner. Two fantastic examples of what poetry can be.

Fields Of Death

By Jodi Hill

In flanders fields,

The fields of woe,

The moon shine down,

Upon our foe.

The wars at end,

A truce we've come upon,

The light goes dim,

And the morn will dawn.

In fanders fields

When poppies die

The grave of dead

Soon will lie

More fall to death

The dead has grown

In flanders fields

The fields alone

Ode to a Fence-Sitter

By Sharon Bell

I marvel at your balance,

And how firm your buttocks be,

Seated on a narrow perch,

With cheeks so splinter-free.

You never make your mind up,

That is no easy task!

And dodge every question,

No matter what is asked,

You’ve mastered indecision,

You’re an expert of unsure,

You understand the points against,

As well as all those for.

Your skill is really best shown,

When presented with a choice,

You “um” and “err” with greatest ease,

With an irresoluted voice.

Your opinions are a mystery,

Locked deep inside your mind,

Shinning jewels of insight,

A richer treasure you won’t find.

And so you wisely keep them,

All secured away,

Just so you’ll never lose them,

And your property they’ll stay.

So I really must admire,

Equivocation,

And recognise it as a type,
Of thoughtful conservation.

Please share, compare, bare. What's new? What's not? How go your days?

 keep it friendly, chums

Hugs to everyone

.

I forgot to put Amelie in my list of movies! Orange could easily be one of this movie's characters. : ) Great selected poems as usual.

I adore that second poem. Wow. what wit!!! there is another poet here who writes this way. In fact a few others I can think of!! One I call the Erma Bombeck of Soup. I think we are all so different, How can a free verser make fun of rhyme or a rhymer make fun of free verse? I, for example, do not think in the same WAY as the sophisticated free versers here. But I adore a well crafted lucid free verse. I think in meter, it's all my mind can allow me to do. Even when I turn off the meter, my poems sound almost like blank verse throughout. I don't like when I am accused of being "sing song" or "restrictive" because I prefer forms. I work better in forms. I NEED those walls around me to excel!!

Thank you for a most entertaining post, Cyndi. I will hazard a guess and say that the poem, Ode to a Fence-Sitter was written with a Libra in mind (I've got some in my family and I recognize the "symptoms")....lol Fields of Death is rather a depressing title, but the poem is a nice tribute to those who had lost so much at Flanders. I welcome these poets and hope to read more of their work. Love to all. Have a splendid weekend. Love, Su

Thanks so much for featuring my poem in your blog, it really made my day! Reading your bio reminded me of one of the first poems I remember writing (I was a little older 10 or 11 I think). I found the original copy of it amongst my Dad's papers after he passed away. I might put it up here sometime.
