I agree with Andrea. I use my head for syllable counting and my manner of speech. The only reason I checked the counter is because my syllables were questioned. And I still say the counter info was baloney. Joyce

It gets tricky Yasmin. It's the simple words that throws us off sometimes. Some words are explained as a single syllable, and another site can mark it as multiple. Good blog lady.

And it was really nice to see you tonight. Didn't want to come off sounding angry. I just get so annoyed by things like syllable counters. here is one example. the word "beloved" It has two pronunciations: be-lov-ed as used in the Bible or Be-loved in modern usage, but even today many people still use the old style as in church services and in poetry. That's just one of many things that can go wrong with having to use a syllable counter. It does not show different dialects and also, it often has flaws, as were mentioned below here by others. Luv, Andrea

Yasmin, my syllable counter is the one in my head and when I do a contest with syllable count at Soup, I just pray to God that the judge realizes my poem is going by "real" spoken English and not some arbitrary moronic device like we have here!!

I write with a pen and count on my fingers. When I have finished a poem I read it aloud, counting agian. I do not trust the syllable counter. If in doubt, I have a dictionary. Although I have been known to err.

Yasmin, I had trouble with my entry for David's contest because of the Soup's syllable counter. When I typed in layer, it counted two syllables, but layers it counted as one. That makes no sense! From now on, I'm taking Cyndi's advice as well. It's dictionary.com for me.

I too am having a horrid time with syllable counters..I think it's best if judges when in doubt request clarification rather than ruling out a good verse over an added or missed syllable. Let the poet make a correction to suit you. Also make note DIALECT is not spoken in the same syllables as the same word in the dictionary.

No the counter is not always accurate. It counted comes as two syllables which it certainly is not. Thanks for the DictionaryDotcom hint, Cyndi. Joyce

Yas, great topic for a blog and I am glad for those who have responded. Perhaps the Soup's administration could eventually switch over to Dictionary DOT COM...lol...I was so pleased to see a recent contest sponsor ask a poet to cite the syllable counter he used. Crafty way to address this issue. Stay cool ,sista !

hey Yas, I agree with Cyndi, the counter here is awful, I have had lots of problems with my present contest as it comes up with different counts all the time! Hope you are ok in Mumbai and settling in nicely, love David

Yasmin, NO NO NO! The syllable counter here at Soup is AWFUL! I have caught numerous problems. For an individual (word by word) syllable check, I use Dictionary.com. I am certain other poets will give you a good warning about the soup counter! It really is hit or miss! Hugs, Cyndi
