Bloggers PhotoHi everyone

I grew up in a small bush town called Lake cargelligo, NSW, Australia. I was in grade two when the impulse to write really began. i had this fantatsic idea for a story which I read aloud to the class - the response was good, so I continued.

I kept writing, basically to entertain myself through my younger years. Poetry had not entered the scene yet (seemed to come along later with an interest in girls). Anyway, I began to dream about being a novelist - Stephen king became my idol in my mid teens. I tried writing like him but ...you know, there is only one SK. i was kind of turning into a real bitch about it too so i admitted defeat.

I gave up on writing much when I discovered alcohol(since sobered up) at 17. I haven't really felt like writing stories at all since then - except for a few short  ones here and there. If not writing poetry then I'd like to write plays if anything.

Poetry has enabled me to express a wide and varied sense of emotion and feeling i would otherwise have trouble 'getting out'. It has been downright ugly at times, however it has all been described with a real honesty i can't really hide or censor. It is the deep desire to convey this absolute honesty which has resulted in some truly remarkable stuff being put on paper - lol, if i don't say so myself. (Gotta give yaself a rap sometimes!)

What is this stuff called poetry? This being of beings. Buggered if i know ...but just sometimes i feel like I can see exactly what i need to see simply by asking for the truth....and sometimes I am able to be humble enough to receive it.

A joyful poet is a fearless one. :-)

* 2013 update
I have recently enrolled in a certificate 4 professional writing and editing course in Melbourne. So far I am enjoying it immensely. it has rekindled my interest in the short story form. Anyways, iIt means i have less time for poetrysoup but I do still write one every now and then...

I have volunteered to find out what experience poets have (group activity for course i am doing). If you have any experience you can add it will be appreciated.

Below are some questions that I have created.

1. Why did you self publish?

2. Where have you self published?

3. Why did you choose the site/company you did?

4. What do you regard as the advantages of self publishing?

5. How would you describe your experience during and after publication?

6. Has any of your work appeared in print as a result of being being self published.

7. If you have self published using print media, how would compare the experience with digital self publishing?

8. Did your investment achieve a return?

Thank you

Brett

Hallo Bret. Answers to these questions may be found on my fb page: Water Dance. Also, please have a look at my two websites: www.waterdance-suzettecrous-author.webs.com and www.suzettecrous-poet.webs.com Self-publishing has worked for me to start off with and I am lucky to know a printer who produce quality work at a reasonable price - I do the artwork, editing and obtaining of the ISBN myself. I print in small numbers and have a good return for my outlay. The Web Store at the first one mentioned, will giveyou some idea and also the Freebies on my About section, which is my advertising at no cost to me :-). Love, Su

It is not as easy as writing some poems and putting them up for sale. Well, that has not been my experience. Poetry is far from dead - there just has to be a market for your work and THAT is the most difficult part of the whole process. Few poets make it big time.

My book, Dance of the Words - A Guide to Various Poetry Forms, is currently in print and doing well. I have had glowing reports from the poet who had read it. I have been approached by a publisher who included my work in their publication (details on my poetry website). I am currently working on a new project, African Scapbook.

I self published. I used a local printer. I didn't use Lulu or Amazon because I wanted artist control and because you are lucky if you get a few cents per book they sell. MY first 100 cost 700, my second book 100 cost me a 1000, I managed to sell them to family and friends at 14 - 17.00 a book. It's exhausting trying to be a writer and market your BOOKS

Thanks for the feedback Debbie. It seems to me that 'artist control' may be difficult to achieve in these times. We have been encouraged by our teachers (they are very good) to seek out many of the answers to questions about the writing industry, including the relationship between editors, publishers and writers. Your experience is definitely noted.
