I WAS ME

First I was me,

Selfish as can be,

Wanting everything from A to Z

And wanting it all for me.

Then I became we,

A part of an us.

I learned to share, give and take

I learned how to trust.

Next I was you,

Believe me it's true.

I would rather give than receive,

It was you I wanted to please.

Now I am them,

A family man.

Giving my children,

All that I can.

If you look real close,

It is easy to see,

I am older and wiser,

And no longer a me.

WORDS

Blog Posted:10/22/2012 1:39:00 PM

Words

Strung together in segments

Pretentious, conflicting, creative? – perhaps

Void of contiguous thought

Some make sense – some aardvark

Read and reread – still perplexed

Free verse at its best

Free verse at its worst

Free verse nonetheless

Defended by the nouveau artiste

Head scratched by rhymers

It is so convoluted it must be genius

Not willing to admit I do not get it – so I must praise it

Words … my word

In my opinion, if the poem is worthy, it has to make sense to most intelligent people. There is a difference between a masterful poem that is hard to understand and one that is just plain gibberish. I don't praise poems i can't understand but i am willing to admit that the subject matter is over my head and concede that the writer is indeed getting through to some of the other poets. However, there are some poems truly in the category of bad writing. You can see by comments these poems are getting, nobody even knows what the person is talking about and it does not even have to be a free verse poem, though usually it is. Some of the best poems you will read here are free verse! just my take.

I hear you Andrea and tend to agree. I like to give the benefit of the doubt to the poet, however, and assume it must be my problem their poem seems awful to me and not theirs. I am sure, in fact, I know, there are plenty here who hink my poems belong in the awful pile as well.

Those words must have been mine... LOL. I can't imagine anyone taking offense at this... We've all been here with someones poem at one time or another. Unique and very well said! Bravo! PS. I've sometimes been here with one of my own poems that were written the night before...

I am right with you Carol - I sometimes go back and read old poems I have written and wonder where the heck my brain was that day! I didn't mean my words to be offesnive - but the can be some tension between the free verse vs. non-free verse contingient. I have read both wonderful and awful poems of both variety. And have written, I would like to believe, some wonderful and awful poems of both as well.

Joe, there are often poems where the p-oet is so osbscure I do not getit. It isn't that I'm not smart, it's just whatever was written means something to the poet and not to me.

You're right Joann, it is more likely that it's not a matter of intellect it is more a matter of having a shared mind-set or shared experiences to figure them out. This is true for me and some really, acknowledged, great pieces of poetry and literature - so it in no way is meant to demean the poet.

Actually, Chris, I do too - although I do write more in rhyme. I do not mean to throw all free verse under the bus - I was just reading a few poems here and read so many that I could make no sense of that this one just spilled out of me. I am not saying the poems were bad, I am just saying I did not have the intellect to figure them out.
