I WAS ME

First I was me,

Selfish as can be,

Wanting everything from A to Z

And wanting it all for me.

Then I became we,

A part of an us.

I learned to share, give and take

I learned how to trust.

Next I was you,

Believe me it's true.

I would rather give than receive,

It was you I wanted to please.

Now I am them,

A family man.

Giving my children,

All that I can.

If you look real close,

It is easy to see,

I am older and wiser,

And no longer a me.

Eric LeGrand

Today marks the 2 year anniversary of the day I watched this young man get injured on the football field.  I wrote the poem below the day after that play took place.

Eric is still paralyzed from the neck down but is making progress towards a recovery.  He is very active in the sports community, is an analyst on the Rutger's Football Radio Broadcast Team and has made many appearances at events and charities all around the US.  Eric has also recently published a book titled, "Believe: My Faith and the Tackle That Changed My Life."

Here is a link to a recent interview on ESPN with this young man:

It really is unfortunate that many young people are getting hurt by doing what they love. Eric's story is one of inspiration -rise above the odds.

One of our neighbors was paralyzed at 16 during a swimming diving accident. Your poem says it all... so touching.

At least once a year a High School student in our area is permanently injured or killed while playing football. They are either too rough, or not protected by enough gear.
