INTRODUCING

~The CAROUSEL~

Introducing

My

Favorite Poem of the Month.

~Carousel~

I hear their laughter and see their bright smiles,

Going round and round with joy together,

Their rhapsody reaches far beyond miles

I hear their laughter.

I believe their dreams make this world brighter,

Rich childhood experiences in wee while

Will teach the love to make them grow better,

A hold of their hands, a care that's tactile.

Carousel, a cradle of young dreamer,

Children galloping up and down in style

I hear their laughter.

Sara Kendrick's new batch of haiku....

How come the silent ones are the ones who are baring better haiku then any of the poets advertising all these different ways to write the proper haiku.
I actually stopped and read some of the poets who want 2 teach us the right way 2 understanding a haiku. I can't believe how lost I felt, and how bad some of them true haiku were. I found most of them dull and boring, and hard to grasp... Almost like a short free verse....
~((cling* I had a funny thought while reading a few..  if that is the real haiku form, then I'm better off sticking 2 the soup's way of haiku))~
However, when I decided to read Sara K, ... I was like WOW~ wow~...

Why isn't this sweet lady, the one, teaching us??~ Maybe she got help from one of these experts... And decided 2 add taste 2 the way she wants us 2 read her haiku.

All the poets who are expressing all these different kinds of tactics, are blowing our minds, and suffocating the fun, we use 2 get out of this haiku form...

I like the way the soup advertises the form...  on another note: Maybe, the soup should research this form and post it in a more proper way, that suits everyone here on the soup.
So far, 3 different poets are giving out their opinions on what haiku'ssss truly are.
BOY!!! it is confusing me.... I see one say this, and the others disagree....
**title yes, no, yes,,,no.... <---lol... and then I spot some with... Gees... **
** what 5 senses ~~~ HU!!!! Fine, I understand no "S" in HAIKU
What should one make of it..... Who is right? Who is wrong????
It is the same old song, AGAIN!..... I thought we changed this channel long ago...

Really poets, who's right who's wrong??
Even the internet offers different styles.....

This is not a friendly blog by the way..........
I do not care if you do not agree,

no hugs no love from me.... PD

Reading again...Sara..Maybe someone should just put some very simple rules on here for those who want to learn..Then in a few days add a blog with a small amount of dept..Then in a few days add a little more depth until all the lessons are taught about the rules of Haiku..Of course, my memory fails me at times but if I practice from simple to depth maybe it will all come together..Sara

...what is being published today at the cutting edge is mainly modern haiku and free verse, with a definite shift towards more rawness and edginess and I welcome that shift; life is not perfect and has very little rhyme or reason, so how can it possibly be captured in neat little stanzas and strict syllable counts? and so if I return to writing haiku it will be my version of haiku - what personally pleases me and what I'd like to read myself - I'm ripping up my rule book! :-)

after reading all sides of the haiku debate about how it should be written and indeed beyond haiku and into the writing of poetry in general, I really only have this to say: life is not perfect and if art imitates life it stands to reason that poetry cannot be perfect either. I think the writing of poetry suffers from perfectionism and I find that the more I read about the rights and wrongs of writing, this technique and that technique, this form and that form, the more of an inhibitory effect it has upon my work; life is fluid and constantly evolving and therefore poetry should be the same (including haiku)...

PD, Thanks for the compliment on my Haiku..I have read some rules on Haiku then forget what they are and if I see something that inspires me I just write it..I know that they might not be correct by all the rules and regulations but I am not entering them in any major contest anywhere...From what I gather there are even two different kinds of Haiku to make it even more confusing..Just enjoy writing..Someone on here will correct you..Sara

I like the 5/7/5 haiku. Sometimes I stray from that form, but not often.

Tanya, I also like the traditional 5/7/5. But the new standard now according haiku society of america is 12 to 14 syllables maximum, with the average being about 8 or 9. I consider these person more in the know than me so I aquiesce to their point of view. Would you call this haiku: the dogs bark, the owl hoots, the cat sleeps. Or would you say that it has three parts and haiku can only have two? Would you say it has juxtaposition, a definite trait of any haiku. These are the requirement I look at when I say a poem is or isn't haiku. Haiku society of America says the same thing. Any notable writer will tell you that a particular write really is or isn't haiku. That is who is to say.

Since I'm new to writing poetry anyways, I get confused on all the hoopla regarding rules and forms and such. I try my best to write haiku in the way I've searched and found it described--I like the 5-7-5, focused on a moment in the 'present' and including 'seasonal' words or image. There seem to be many variations and who's to say that any one of them are wrong. I am NOT enjoying all the negativity flowing about forms! Poetry is personal and to be shared at the same time. It is to be enjoyed, so enjoy it everyone!!!

You do well with the longer poems I have read of yours, don't worry about haiku. Or just call it a Lune.

I agree very much with Brian`s golden rule here. That`s what true poetry is about. All the doodeli-doo coming from form fanatics would`ve been far more respected and gotten alot more credit if posted over at the article section.Just my 2 cents though anyway..but of course then there wouldn`t be any commotion around the subject:-)

PD whatever form we write in the 'golden rule' remains..poetry at heart is an oral art form. How does it sound, the poem, when read aloud, is it poetic.

a shot--/one of the porch chairs/ stops rocking/ or/ one of the porch/chairs stops rocking --/a shot/xxxxxxxxxxxxxx/in the top one line 1 is the subject and lines 2 and 3 are grammatically connected and subject relates to line 1, making the poem have only 2 parts. part one and part two are connected by subject matter. The second way is this and the explanation is the same. 1 and 2 are gram. connected and is the subject. line 3 is the juxt. perception of what was in line 1 and 2.

For my taste option works best, very poetic with with the ceasura after the 'as is moment' of line one.Very visual and evocative

Ruben, i did a search, and I found 65 different rules in Haiku, ...Those interested in 65 different "rules" are crazy. Many of them are long gone... Only because of reasons like this.. SO, it's like Chris said, haiku has been a long drawn out war. Rules are constantly made and thrown out, cuz of all the disagreements.

My teacher one thought me that a haiku is a very structured poetry form. Inspired by the Japanese, three-line form, containing 5-7-5 Containing just seventeen syllables, the haiku cannot capture a "big picture." One tiny images of incredible nature. I like wonderful images when it comes to haiku'ssssss.... Ruben, I only know the easy way of writing a haiku, I never fell for the Japanese and American haiku. I am 2 simple, and I really got lost with some of the disagreements.

pd, I'm as confused as you are over it all, it's taken the pleasure out of haiku for me too, and I seldom bother reading or writing it these days...but yes, you are right, sara kendrick writes some wonderful haiku, I was thinking that to myself just the other day; I'm not a great fan of haiku but I always enjoy hers - quiet, gentle soul that she is, though she can roar on the odd occasion, as I discovered when she once fiercely defended me against criticism! her kindness and support I have never forgotten :-)

Chris, that is what I'm venting about.... In the past, I have receive a few lessons, from a few of the poets trying to teach us haiku.. Each one has a different ways, ... what the beep... why do some disagree with one another, why, can't they agree on some junctions. I read some of the arguments,,, I was like ~~wow....
  1. Date: 11/8/2012 5:21:00 PM
Alright, I am game with your unfriendly blog(as you put it). I agree with several different arguements .... including your opinion that uber-strict haiku can be boring. It can be SO boring! Not just boring, but un-poetic too -- it almost doesn't read like poetry. But I agree with some opinions/arguements, stating how haiku(any of the 100,000,000,000 styles of it)needs a few haiku-bones in the skeleton, for the end result to be at least close to a haiku-body. The Soup's definition of haiku at the moment, is for short free verse. If people enjoy that style, who should try stopping them. I will read Sara's latest haiku.

It isn't up to me to correct anyone, because I am still learning; and I will always be learning and reinventing my style, so it truly isn't up to me to correct anyone. If a friend wants some feedback, or to possibly discuss new ways, new directions to move towards, this is when I am at my best. Remember about 2 years ago, when about 30 poets were in a sort-of agreement of wot haiku should be? Well, I have moved on from that point....a ghost in the past. I haven't posted that style of haiku since a year ago(I haven't posted any haiku here since then). My new style of haiku that I am keeping hidden from the public, would be deemed as 'non-haiku' by some of our strict teachers. Does this reality stop me from continuing to evolve? Not at all. In the end, it is up to us to look into ourselves and without an ounce of self-doubt, declare if we are writing haiku, or not writing haiku.

When someone believes they know best, this usually ends up in some sort of war, whether it is because people think their religion is best, their country is best, their skin colour, their haiku knowledge....yes, I have had a few chuckles along the way, but I have also learned some good tips too.
A Avatar Poet Destroyer A Date: 11/8/2012 5:40:00 PM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

wow... never thought of it as war,.... just an opinion of who thinks they know best,,,, whats your take CHRIS... why are you not correcting us... you are a bright poet... I bet you sit back, and laugh at some of the haiku lessons being sold here on the soup...

PD, from the very genesis of haiku many centuries ago, people have been fighting about it. And fighting in a blood-thirsty manner. This is actually normal behaviour for people who are into haiku LOL!
