Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at Shadowpoetry.com.

Winners of Let's Get Technical Poetry Contest

Blog Posted:7/27/2014 11:50:00 AM

Here are the winners of my Let’s Get Technical Poetry Contest. It was difficult for me to judge this particular contest based not just on content of each poem, but on its  technical aspects as well. First, I think there were fewer than five poems on this whole list which were impeccable in all the things I was checking for: punctuation, spelling, grammar usage, adherence to form, use of imagery and other poetic devices and finally content. Regarding that final criterion, I chose my top placements according to whether they were very interesting to me or not. Therefore, a few of the poems lower on this list may have had fewer technical mistakes than some of the poems I gave a top placement to, but I was also placing my winners according to my personal taste in poetry. Naturally, what is interesting to one poet is not always going to be as interesting to another. (Remember, guys, I love SHORT poems!)

There were several poets who lost simply by entering poems that were too long. The limit was 16 lines, and I got several that were longer. Some poets did not write correctly in the form they chose to show me. For example, one person wrote a sonnet with rhyming couplets instead of alternate rhyme. Another poem, a good one in fact, identified his/her poem as a terrza rima. It was lovely, but the poet was using that form incorrectly. Some poets were inconsistent in the use of punctuation and some did not use it at all! If a person made a valiant effort to punctuate, even though his/her commas and periods were not always placed correctly, I still put his/her poem on my list, as long as it was a poem I really enjoyed.  If you are someone who entered this contest and do not see yourself on my winners’ list at all, I want to thank you for supporting this contest. You may be a poet whose writing I usually enjoy. I think a few poets simply chose the wrong poem to show me. Please contact me in a Soup mail if you would like to know specifically why your poem is not on the list. Congratulations to my winners!

I'm sorry that some people worked hard and I did not place their poems. I did not understand all the entries. Some people used so MUCH punctuation but it was used incorrectly. Recently I gave an article or two for Soup to post and I see now that the article on Commas has been posted. However, that article does not even address the main problem I am seeing with comma use in poetry. So I will be working on a shorter way of explaining that later. Finally time for me to start dinner!

Thanks you for an interesting challenge, Andrea. It is always a pleasure to participate in your contests - they are well thought through. Thank you my placement - I did take a risk by dividing it into two parts... :-) Congratulations to all the winners. Love, Su
