Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at Shadowpoetry.com.

Roy, I Think I Found the Pattern

Blog Posted:3/23/2014 7:32:00 PM
Roy was questioning why I appear so often at the top of tied placements. I am not always at the top of them, but I was curious why it happens, so I had a theory and I tested it very quickly with my last contest winners in Perfect LImerick Contest.

I went quickly through my TOP Six placements. There were a few ties in the five placements beneath the number one winner. It was just as I had thought:  the people who had entered my contest first got the placement FIRST under their tied category. For example, when there were three number three spots, I could see that the first appearing third place winner was the first one that had been entered into my contest, the second third place winner had come in AFTER that one, etc. etc. I think this makes sense.

Of course, If a poem has the one and only tenth place spot, even if that person entered first in my contest, he would appear last on the list because he is tenth place. But if there had been another tenth place winner, that one would appear after the first person's name.

But here is further proof for my theory that it's WHEN you enter that determines your tied placement. I appear three times as first of the tied spots in the contests of Leonora, Giorgio and Dr. Ram. I remember distinctly seeing those contests when they were first posted. I quickly went and got my poems to enter for them. If I am not mistaken, we were allowed to use old poems and I knew right away what I wanted to use. However, I saw that I was LAST place  in all the HM's of Francine's contest. I had taken out my original poem for her and replaced it with another one at the very last minute. I remember I was like THE last person to enter her contest because of that. And there I am, LAST place of the HM's!  Finally, I went to page two of recent contest winners. Guess what? I am NOT at the top of the first place tie winners in Giorgio's "Impress Me with a Small Poem V". That proves right there, I am not always first. Thank heavens. It is kind of embarrassing being at the top too often and looking like a poetry hog!! But anyway, I think I have somewhat proven my theory.

SOOOOO, In summary , if you want to appear first in a tie, just act quickly and post your poem!!! Just want everyone to know,  i am not always "on the top" though I am partial to that position. heeheehee.

I think your theory holds true. In the Blues contest just announced, I remember reading Craig's and yours before I posted mine. I thought it could be alphabetical at first but then I noticed Charles' rated lower than mine. So I think you nailed it. And hey do not feel bad about being on TOP - your poetic prowess deserves it.

you are sweet, but thankfully I am not always on top. that would be just too much. I don't mind being on the bottom. I just feel disappointed to not make a list at all.

NEVER feel bad about being "on top" ;) It's wonderful being in that "position"...Ok, on to a serious note. Andrea...in my humble opinion, you're ON TOP because your writing is flawless...flowing...and....FANTASTIC! Yes, my dear...when I read your work..I'm hard put to find a "mistake". Not that I'm an expert, but I do teach language and am used to looking for errors...Here, I let my hair down and am not so careful with editing my own work, but I have an eye for catching things. You write BEAUTIFULLY....and if you're ON TOP...You're there because your DAMN GOOD! ;) Excuse the profanity...couldn't help it!

Thanks, Eileen. I am fascinated by the fact you teach language. Do you teach your own language or English too? I too let my hair down and use slang around the blogs and in my informal poetry as well. In judging, I am always noticing little grammar things that most people do not pay attention to, I guess that's why some poems score lower. I feel bad that people may never know why I have scored them lower. Often it's a matter of meter or just my personal feelings about the poem. We just liked some things better than others!

Andrea, this is a logical and valid analysis. I agree with you. :) G.

I know, Roy. But it made me want to find out for once and for all and hopefully I got the answer right.

thanks, ruben. I have always had an idea that is how it was working and I am very quick to enter contests when they are asking for older poems!! Not so quick when they want new ones!!!
