Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at Shadowpoetry.com.

On the Death of a Young Man

Blog Posted:1/4/2014 4:31:00 PM
The other day I returned to work for Prep Day at my school. We were informed that Jimmy, a wonderful young man from Mexico, had died in a car crash after Christmas. He was an outstanding student, only about 20 years old, with so much potential. Also, he had gotten married over the holidays and even bought a house in Utah where he was going to return with his bride for the new semester at our school.

I am so saddened by Jimmy's death. That saying "Only the good die young" seems truer than ever for me now. I wish I could compose a poem about it, but my world is topsy turvy right now. My son's stepson was in a national wrestling match for young boys last night and I got to go see it near Park City. Then I had a sleepover with my daughter's son Hyrum who had joined us.

I had believed my son and his wife and kids were going back to Oregon today and I just got a call that they are coming here in an hour!! It comes at a time when I need to do a lot of preparation for the new semester and catch up on poetrysoup, but all that will have to wait till tomorrow. It's so nice to see family when they live far away because it is so rare for me. Does anyone else have my problem? Finding times to be with family that have moved away? My kids grew up without any cousins or grandparents around and I sure missed that in my life.

If I didn't say it already to any of you. Have a very happy new year. And please TAKE CARE. Poor Jimmy was in a car in which the driver had fallen asleep and his father is in a coma from it. All of you, take care in this new year and let's have gratitude for all that we have!

That'a a terrible thing, Andrea. Prayers for Jimmy's family. We just never know when someone will be suddenly gone....scary thought. As far as family goes...I have tons of extended family all over the country, but all of my immediate family...even 1st cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents all live here close to us. Off subject, but have I ever told you that I have a good friend that works here for me named Joe Dietrich?...I don't know how common the name Dietrich is...

I feel overwhelmed in my work lately too, Nette. Even now, I am going to finally do a few poetry comments, but I need a lot more time for it than what I have in front of me for today!!

Hi, Francine, thanks for taking time to read my blog. I hope your new year has started out well.

Our son has been with us for a few weeks, home from university. Today he goes back to Vancouver and we will miss him. Still I enjoy Mary and I just being the two of us. We do of course hope that he will settle and work close to home when he graduates. I know there is no guarantee but a father can hope.

I am with you, Richard. Love seeing the kids from time to time but now that they are grown with kids, they have their own lives to live. I just really missed not being able to take my kids to fun reunions and holiday events that I got to share among my own cousins, aunts and uncles, etc.

I am so sorry about the young man and his faher and all others that didn't make it through the lovely holidays. I went to a funeral today for a man the same age as my oldest daughter. He died on Christmas Eve after having a stroke. So sad for his family and all of us. He was my next door neighbor. Love, Joyce

It really hits hard when you have a neighbor die too. Sorry about that man who had the stroke.

I am truly sorry to hear about this. In town, here, we have lost a little boy of only five. He was autistic and wandered outside... his home backs onto the nith river and the news has reported he was fascinated by the river. A hole was discovered in the ice and one of his boots was nearby. His body has not been recovered and the police have stopped searching the river due to the freezing conditions. A special team has come to town with a robot camera... the whole town is wearing blue ribbons... this has hit me hard as a mother of a young child. I can't imagine this loss... and the lack of closure. This is a tight community that I've moved to... very like soup. Sad so very sad...

It's good to live in a close community like that, Cyndi. How sad for the family of that little boy.

I am so sorry to hear of the tragic end to a young man's life. The older I become the more I realize that one does not have to have a personal connection, when hearing of something so sad as this, to hold the grief in my heart, just as you are doing, dear Andrea. I'm so sad to hear this...... and feel your loss, as if it were someone I knew. Too often it is the innocent, the young, who are just on the brink of life, it is too much to comprehend. They say it is ours not to know why, but we can't help but beg for the answers. Hugs Andrea.....and yes....enjoy your family .....any moment spent together is a gift.

I was thinking about the afterlife and Jimmy. I know he is there, so it is not him for whom we should grieve, but for his new wife and his father in the coma and his mother who has lost them both!
