Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at Shadowpoetry.com.

VEGGIES or FRUITS? & the VEGGIES my friends love and hate!
Blog Posted:3/2/2013 1:24:00 PM

I got to thinking after my last blog. We are all so different. I was raised up on canned corn, green beans and peas. So I cannot stand the taste of fresh green beans or frozen peas. Corn is the only one i can eat fresh , canned or right off the cob!!

You guys were giving me nice recipes and telling me to cook the collard greens, etc, but BELIEVE ME, that would NOT help me!! I have tried cooked spinach, asparagus, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, etc etc. I just hate the taste of them all!!! I don't even like cooked carrots. And the only way I can eat broccoli is if it is chopped up in small pieces and floating inside a nice creamy cheese soup or something!!

I like a fresh salad with different kinds of lettuce, celery, raw carrots and spinach leaves, onions, cucumber, cilantro, and peppers. Anything else, I probably won't like it, unless it is something like parsnips, squash or potatoes, those are ones I love to eat baked, boiled or fried!

Fruits are ok, but not something I plan my day around. I just try to get in at least one a day with my forced 3 or 4 veggie servings! I just buy the ones I like when they are in season (grapes, pineapple, apples, berries and melon). How about you guys?

WHICH DO YOU TRY TO EAT MORE OF EACH DAY?

FRUITS OR VEGGIES?

By the way, Here are the results of what I learned about my SOUPER friends in my last blog:

GWEN: Spinach! (must be a Popeye!!)

CHARLOTTE loves a spinach/cabbage/carrot salad! She hates                     something called laver (like a seaweed)
MANDY loves Broccoli

DAVID loves sprouts (I think he said he hated garlic)

Craig, on the other hand, LOVES garlic (YAYYY, Craig)

CHARMA loves tomatoes and olives & HATES asparagus

YASMIN, the most like me, loves potatoes and corn.

SEREN loves kale and cauliflower cheese & cooks veggies well

CATIE loves many veggies, especially red potatoes. She hates
cilantro and onions (aw, come on,Catie, those are                  some of the best ones!)

GAIL mentions her favorite as celery.

CARRIE & Suzette, like some of the others here, simply                                  LOVE their veggies!

HEATHER loves Bell peppers (me too!) but hates celery!

NIKKO loves many kinds of veggies but hates mallow(??)

RUEBEN has a good recipe for collard greens (but I'll pass)

And PD said, "I'll pass."

I must admit, I really have to force myself to eat veggies - they are not my first choice! Fruit, on the other hand, I LOVE. Apples, clementines, grapes, canteloupe, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, bananas... I love them ALL! :)

ANDREA, Do you remember the movie 'Being There' starring Peter Sellers, and Shirley McLaine? He played the part of a 'Mentally Challenged' Gardner...who ...through a series of 'Comic errors' eventually becomes adviser to the President. Well any way....He said it best: "VEGETABLES ARE BEST SERVED FRESHEST...RIGHT OFF THE UNPLUGGED LIFE LINE IN A HOSPITAL!"

you may be a carb addict, andrea, because you like all the sweetish, starchy things like corn and potatoes, but I'm intrigued about this blood type diet thing, only trouble is, I have no idea what my blood group is! I forgot to say I also detest leeks, but I like most fruit, though, given the choice, I'd go for chocolate over fruit any day! haha

I don't know if the negative or positive has much to do with it, Ruben. Anyway, aren't you from Argentina? that means you had PRIME BEEF, which is best meat for O's!!

you got it, charlotte. I was brought up in a big family where our big Sunday night delight was popcorn , a huge bowl of it for us all to dig into during Bonanza on tv! O blood types are the protein people. So when I eat a reasonable amount of greens plus lots of protein, I am fit as a fiddle!! Find out your blood type and I will tell you the "offensive" foods for you.

ps not a fruit eater as such unless its of the tree or bush in front of me, I dislike biscuits and cake unless its a slice of Parkin with a slice of cheese to help it down xx

No one mentioned peanut butter - it's not from an animals so it must be a vegetable, right? Peanuts like potatoes and carrots grow underground on a plant. A little peanut butter goes a long way on a rice cake, with maybe a slice of ham on top.

Speak of the devil, I just finished boiling an entire head of cabbage (to be followed by well seasoned, baked-to-near-burnt pork chops) Four slices bacon til crisp dump in immeasurable amounts of garlic and chopped bell peppers, saute, then 3 cups water, add cabbage and boogie down...also, all rednecks are required to like collards...same recipe as above only add one monstous sliced onion...like both with a touch of cider vinegar...Salad: Asparagus, tomato, onion and avacado soaked in balsamic vinegar (Ahhh...what's for desert?) And hold the fruit please...

i usually.do cabbage your way and add the seeds...Othertimes i mash the.boiled cabbage add two eggs add gammon.or bacon cubes plus coriander and garlic.I fry.it in very.few oil.No one would.notice.that its cabbage or cauliflower.You.can bake it in the.oven to avoid oil and those on a diet can just use egg whites.Tim and Amdrea . Tim i understand what you mean seeing what you have in the cupboard.Cooking is art for.those.who.love.it.I lpve.it ;)

funny you mention coleslaw. I can actually tolerate it. my mom put mini marshmallows and pineapple tidbits in it. Actually, I am ok not to like brussel sprouts, cabbage and other similar ones. they are against the O blood type. My book tells me NOT to eat them. That makes me happy that my body was naturally following that rule!!

Re veggies we could have been twin sisters..I do love to make hot delicious pumpkin soup too.I love tomatoes..i count them as veg even though they re considered fruit.Re fruit i love them all..My favourite winter fruit are bananas whilsr my least favourite are apples..maybe cos i was forced to eat ut when i was young. The only apples i manage to eat are very red skinned apples..other than that they d have to be bouled and mixed with nutmeg..cinnamon and walnuts.Re summer fruit my favourite is water melon ..following strawberries. My least favourite are peaches..but I do love fruit and always take a good portion a day')
