Andrea Dietrich's Blog
Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself. Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at Shadowpoetry.com.

Hello, fellow Soupers and AWESOME poets of five-line poetry. I want to do an announcement of my top three placement winners (of which there were nine) and also let everyone know that the contest has been finalized . Sadly, I cannot know all my winners unless I search them out. However, I can tell everyone that except for one or two who did not follow the rules of the form they were doing, everyone IS on the winners' list and you can check your placement number by looking in your contest area. I have contacted Soup and I sure hope they will show my winners list soon so that you can view all the winners of this contest. I am proud of everyone for doing so very well!
Now for my GRAND WINNERS. I decided to show the actual poems of the first place winners, for which I had a tie. One is rhymed and one is not, but I hope you will also agree with me that they are breathtakingly beautiful. Incidentally, Caught in the Sun was chosen as a theme by only two poets, and ditto for A Prelude to Winter!
Caught in the Sun/ by Heather Ober
Where dawn is born and clouds are spun To clothe the sky in golden lace, The sea ignites as currents chase Soft morning light that's just begun To wake our love, caught in the sun.
On the Edge of a Dream/ Suzette Crous
scent of virgin snow bathing the night in silence my daughter’s footsteps echoing on dream’s frayed edge a yearning heart constricting
Second place went to these three poets: To Craig Cornish for his beautiful quintet, On the Edge of a Dream To Charlotte Puddifort for her dreamy imagery used in On the Edge of a Dream and to to Yesha Sha for the stellar rhyme and imagery of her Closer than a Kiss.
Third place winners were also amazing: Francine Robert's very romantic Tasting Bliss and The Edge of a Dream represented in three different forms by: Rick Parise Isaiah Zerbst and a mystery person! Since I could not locate this person's poem even by using the search engine of Poetry Soup, I thought I would show his/her poem to you. Please if anyone knows who wrote this one, will you let me know who it is. I decided to give this one third place because I was so impressed how this person used ALL FIVE of my themes within each line of his/her quintet:
The Edge of a Dream by ???
Your silhouette caught in the sun Our lip’s first time at tasting bliss This prelude to a winter’s fall New hearts now closer than a kiss On the edge of a dream undone
A final note of interest: The most popular theme in my contest was On The Edge of a Dream, followed very closely by the two kissing themes: Closer than a Kiss and Tasting Bliss. So we have some very dreamy and/or romantic souls here at PoetrySoup!
