The Blitz poem: An Article by Robert Brewer

A few poets have asked me over the past year to write up something about the blitz poem, which I’d never tried or even heard of before. So I did a little research, and it actually looks pretty fun. It was created by Robert Keim and is a 50-line poem of short phrases and images

A few poets have asked me over the past year to write up something about the blitz poem, which I’d never tried or even heard of before. So I did a little research, and it actually looks pretty fun. It was created by Robert Keim and is a 50-line poem of short phrases and images.

Here are the rules:

Line 1 should be one short phrase or image (like “build a boat”)
Line 2 should be another short phrase or image using the same first word as the first word in Line 1 (something like “build a house”)
Lines 3 and 4 should be short phrases or images using the last word of Line 2 as their first words (so Line 3 might be “house for sale” and Line 4 might be “house for rent”)
Lines 5 and 6 should be short phrases or images using the last word of Line 4 as their first words, and so on until you’ve made it through 48 lines
Line 49 should be the last word of Line 48
Line 50 should be the last word of Line 47
The title of the poem should be three words long and follow this format: (first word of Line 3) (preposition or conjunction) (first word of line 47)
There should be no punctuation

There are a lot of rules, but it’s a pretty simple and fun poem to write once you get the hang of it.

Ruben O has a great one up everybody go read it!!!

Here's the beginning of mine

Title - Soar (preposition or conjunction) (first word of line 47)

Let me fly
Let me soar
soar like a bottle rocket
soar like shooting star

As Ruben said Cyndi found this gem & I glad Ruben & I & you/Suz did too, maybe writing the title first would be a good suggestion getting a coherent title is HARD

Im glad you like the "Blitz," Deborah. A couple of months ago, Cyndi blogged about this form (you're busy with the submissions to magazines during that time). And Mr. Keim opened an account in PS (Cyndi's charms). If you want to read his "Blitz examples", he left a comment on mine, click it and visit his page.

Think blonde..and you get inspired..Anyways One single white hair wont make a difference ,One can cut it or die it or let it be like Richard Gere or Clooney : ).Bald is fashionable and cool too.Have a great day : )Not even Simon Cowell can inspire me tonight nor neurus or icarus or the ignazu falls..Sooo tired..gnite

Oki Ru- Short phrases~images~No complete thoughts.Guess I start writing my poem anew..Its not easy as it seems..Plus prepostion or conjunction in the title ..etc..I will try it again when I get 'inspired again' : ).Tnks teacher
    O. Avatar Ruben O. Date: 7/25/2014 4:27:00 PM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

I think that the main "ingredient" is the flow. Also, we must be careful with the use of verbs: short phrases (preferably images) ... but not sentences, not complete thoughts.

Mr Kiem now confirmed that is the first word in line 47 ,,, Therefore: 1st word in line 3; 1st word in line 47; joined by some preposition or conjunction. :-) - in that order.

From the blog interview with Mr Keim, he states "the word from line 47" (not specifying first or last), but his own example uses the last word in line 47. That is why I am querying the rules commonly found on the internet. :-)
  1. Date: 7/25/2014 9:58:00 AM
"The format is unique- twenty-four couplets, each line beginning with the last word of the previous couplet, ending with two single word lines, the last word of lines 48 and 47, respectively. As mentioned, the lines are short and fast, but consist of at least two words (other than the last two lines), and most are cliché, common or recognizable phrases. The blitz lends itself well to being read aloud." ~Robert Keim [http://voices.yahoo.com/poetic-form-blitz-5420951.html

In the example posted on this quoted website, the title, Country May Fly, was derived from the first word of line 3, + "may", and the LAST word of line 47. So, I would say that ONE of the words in line 47 must be used in the title. Otherwise, Mr Keim might as well have stated that the last word of the poem (line 50) must be the last word in the title. Do you agree?
Richards Avatar Suzette Richards Date: 7/25/2014 10:00:00 AM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

He decided on a long blast of short phrases, and on a length that could be "read at a frantic pace to the point of nearing exhaustion (as the name 'blitz' implies), which also lent itself to ending the poem with single word lines for a fade-out effect, hoping that the last two words would leave a lasting impression."

We dream/We wish/,wish upon a star/wish down in the sand/,sand against the wind/sand against the sea/sea which lived our past/sea which soaked our feet/feet which marked new paths /feet which walked dark streets. Ow gee got me inspired..Am I on the wrong or right.track...?To be revised and to be continued : )

Oopsie Ma made a mistake only 3 words allowed in title - the biggest thing is to make sure what you want the title to be cause you are using the first word in line 3 & 47

oh, how funny, Debs, i just saw your example of this poem on your poetry page. I was thinking ruben was mr. O, but this blog now confirms it. Gosh I was writing blitz and did not even know it that one time I told you about; however I did not do it with that required syllable count. Let me go see ruben's poem now.
