Hello Friends of the Soup.   I am constantly learning from all of you, and writing is something I love, but never made time for until now. I have always been a California girl, born and raised in the southern part of the state, now living in upper Northern California. Surrounded by mountains, and beautiful scenery, I have great inspiration.   I think I have always loved to create, it comes from my Dad, and his dad, I suppose. Although my mother was the rock of the family, my Dad was the dreamer, and a cowboy at heart. I grew up with horses that he raised, and memories of him singing around a campfire on trips we took. He wrote poetry, and his own songs, and played guitar.  His father did the same thing when my dad was a boy.  My grandfather was a trail guide, in the early l900's in Yosemite Nat'l Park, where my dad lived as a child.  My purpose in life has been family. I am married to my High School sweetheart,  we went to college together, I taught school for awhile, then raised two fine sons (both H.S. teachers) and a beautiful daughter.  Have 5 grandchildren who we adore, and fortunately they all live fairly close by.  I've had a small catering business, but now we are both retired, live in the country on a couple of acres, with rangeland behind us.  We are down to one dog, after a mix of this and that!  No horses, although horses, cattle, coyotes, and all kinds of wildlife live behind our place. Our kids are gifted musicians, and one son writes poetry that blows me away, some which has been published. I love poetry and piano, all music, movies, camping, our little cabin in the mountains, but especially my family.  And I love Poetry Soup..and all the wonderful company here!

HAVE YOU EVER SAT ON A VOLCANO??
Blog Posted:7/30/2010 2:22:00 PM

Have you ever sat on a volcano?  Day before yesterday (Wednesday) we took a short drive and picnic to Lassen National Park, which is an hour's drive from our hometown.  Had a wonderful day....a picnic, and enjoyed one of the wonders of the world, that just so happens to be in our backyard (well almost)!   Posted just a few pictures I took this time while we were up there....still quite a lot of snow on the higher elevations.  If you are ever in No. California....take a drive up this wonderful mountain.  It is one of the lesser known parks in the nation....absolutely gorgeous, still an active volcano, with boiling sulfer areas...and so accessible...never crowded like the better known national parks.  Come and see our beautiful "backyard"!

Interesting. Actually I stood 40 feet away from the main crater of Mount Etna in Sicily in 1975, at about 5:00am and I witnessed the most gorgeous sunrise ever. Thanks for sharing, Carrie. Best wishes, Caroline.

Something I have no desire to visit is an active volcano. As a cautious person I would say why would you want too visit one. I guess I wouldn't make a good explorer. I am much to cautious. I wouldn't like the sulphur smell either. I guess it would be a different experience Carrie. I could never figure out people who live under real live volcanoes. Maybe they don't have a choice. Glad you enjoyed it. God Bless Phyl

Wow, Paula...that is a close encounter, that we've never had here. Although Lassen last blew in 1917....so one never knows. There are many photos I've seen, that were taken then, and our town was covered in ash and soot during that last eruption. We had friends in Portland when St. Helen's erupted, and like you, they gave us stunning day by day descriptions of the events while they were happening. I would rather picnic, enjoy my day on the mountain, rather than endure it's wrath!!

Although I live in CA and visited a lot of sites I have never been there. It must be very COOL in your backyard, dear Carrie. I went to Mt. St. Helen's and the museum. It really was impressive. When I visited Maui, I was mesmerized with Hana, the Eastern side of the island. You can REALLY see the presence of the volcano by its BLACK sand beaches and the beautiful, luscious vegetation that reminds us that : somehow "Life Has Its Way"
