Life is an infinite continuum, feeding on its own death. Our mortality, real and imagined, lives within. We can always see these truths with a discerning eye. The mirrored images that seem like two, are but one, a parallel universe whose paths cross like a wisp of wind, we are all of one time, like prose and poems written in separate centuries, but of the same struggle. There, always there, truth never hides, except for those who don’t seek it for fear of what they might find. From light to dark we fly in different directions though toward the same destination. What matters is what we do on our flight. Do we see the paths of leaves as they float on the pond, the reflection of the sky beyond, and the trees, who have now shed their leaves but will reflect full in the spring; beneath the leaves, the roots of the lily pads and the stare of a wary carp who looks from his world as we do from ours? We must find time on our journey to read, play a game, or simply sit and wonder at the marvels around us, for death will come in its own time…

I’m going to put on my waders for this one. I’ve written several “haiku” since joining poetry soup, some good, most not. While there are “rules” for writing in English, there are also Jazz Haiku, the Beat haiku of Ginsburg and Kerouac, and interpretations other than in English. My conclusion is that there are many acceptable ways to write Haiku, not all of which rely on strict syllable count, the three-line convention, references to nature, or even the cutting word. So, I just enjoy myself, and never hesitate to take the liberty of exceptions to the English traditions if they work for my intentions and enjoyment.

I agree, Haiku is perhaps the most difficult poem to write... not just putting three lines down on the page and call it Haiku...there is more depth to this form of poetry.

They're some tough little pieces, but intriguing. The cut word is the difficult part, but it ties out all together for me. I'm horrible too Craig, that makes two of us! : )

Shakespeare broke the rules when he wrote his sonnets. Don't sweat the small stuff, just write.

I'm loving this blog......!!!! As for my own attempts at haiku poetry,....I've been trying to get a grip on it by watching Deb and Charles......but still....if I happen to get one right, it's purely by accident!!

I'm exploring haiku, yeah, but I LOVE metaphor and the haiku that moves me most, contains it. PUBLISHED, RECOGNIZED haiku. So, when someone says, "Nope. REAL haiku can't have metaphor. It's a rule." I go all Mr. T on them. "WATCHA TALKING ABOUT, FOOL!" I learn by reading, writing, exploring, questioning and yes, yes, even listening. then I put it in the pot, give it mix, flavour it MY way and see if I like the taste. If I do, then I'm happy.

I encourage you to read one haiku a day from that site for 14 days. Write haiku when you want. After two weeks, are YOU happier with your haiku?

I hear all of you and must say I do have every respect for the true Haiku devotees like Charles and Debbie and actually feel bad that it appears to be a form that is the least understood. Cyndi seem to have it down too. Debbie, bless her soul has tried to help me but rocks can't swim so---I don't know.

Hi, Daddy-O! :) A few years ago, a friend of mine was going through a devasting divorce. She had a sixteen month old, had just bought a old fixer uper (mice, rot, poor insulation, weeds four feet high) and then, in the midst of chaos, her husband leaves her for another woman. I was there. I was there A LOT. Together, we explored the concept of zen. Tuning out what doesn't matter, zoning in on what does. As a writer and closet poet, I explored haiku. What intested me about haiku is the concept that it is about the moment! And that moment can be both universal in truth and completely personal. NEVER let the opinions of others deter your creative path. What makes you happy, do... if a haiku captures something real, significant and meaningful for you, then let capture it! And if you like haiku, read haiku, discover for yourself that opinions differ. Look at the Western haiku of the sixties, Basho, Check out Natalie Goldburg... One great website i really love is http://www.dailyhaiku.org/ look at todays! It is lovely and deep and very emotional. Don't direct a very WELL DESERVED pout at the poor, defenseless haiku (I have promised another on soup I will behave, oh, but I'm ready to blow up. so the lip is zipped, but only just barely! LOL!) haiku LOVES you. ;-) haiku is patient, giving, accepting. Haiku accepts everything you want to give it. Haiku does not know judgement, does not count syllables. Haiku just ... is... like zen. If you dont like haiku, it just smiles and waves and says, "all is fine. I'm here when you want me." Haiku is indulgent. Anyway, write what you love, write what you feel, and damn the cannons and the balls on some people. LOL. Ooops one slip. Just a one. HUGS!

You make perfect sense, Cyndi. I have stated ages ago that I have been told (and I believe this as well), that all Zen is haiku, but not all haiku is Zen. If a few well chosen words could move you and someone else as well in the process.... 100 years from now, someone might read it and say: "That is what I needed right now".....

Great explanation and it helped me understand Haiku a little more. Suz

see my 'haiku fanatics' poem...art shouldn't tie itself up in knots with rules - write what you feel comfortable writing, what comes naturally and what you personally would like to read...I enjoy metaphor, imagery and even a bit of rhyme within haiku, I think it works well, so why not use it? I'm happy writing my technically incorrect haiku or 'short verse' as it has been called lol

Craig ,Traditional haiku may have these 'rules' when written in Japanese or when translated therefrom. English language 'haiku' (ie Western ) are merely imitative of the Japanese style (in truth an impossible objective , hence the problem you have highlighted). The only 'rule' for a English language 'triplet' (or for all 'haiku' for that matter) is the same for all verse ,IS IT POETIC. Ignore the 'purists' keep writing triplets if you so wish, label them 'free verse' or 'verse'.Rgds Brian

I know what you mean. I've had some advice on this and still I think that most who read mine think it's total bunk. No one seems to stick to the 5-7-5 rule of syllables tough I'm meticulous about that. Also...the dramatic turn at the end of the second line...then there is content....nature! Got it right? What else is missing....I really want to know! :-)
