About CYNDI MACMILLAN
(Show Details...)
Bloggers Photo Writing a biography irks me. How much to reveal? What tidbits to conceal?

The Basics: I’m a 45 year-old, stay-at-home mom of an adorable two year old girl. I’m happily married to a wonderful man who is my living contradiction, the quiet to my loud, the calm to my frantic. Life continually amuses, bemuses and confuses me.

My first poem, which I wrote at five, was entitled, “Lov is Magik” and my father kept the fading, folded paper I scribbled it upon in his wallet for decades. I have tinkered in poetry ever since, but my main passion is fiction. My short stories have been published in the local papers. Occasionally, I dabble with creative non-fiction. I have a several chapters of a book completed which I’m hoping to submit to Avalon Books.

Despite years of living in Ontario, I will always consider myself foremost a Montrealer. Now living in Waterloo County, home of Research in Motion, maker of the Blackberry, I am content in our downsized apartment which is close to uptown, but overlooks Laurel Creek.  Though considered Canada’s Silicon Valley, the city is surrounded by a picturesque countryside filled with Mennonites. It is not uncommon to see a Mercedes Benz carefully pass a horse drawn wagon. Even our local hardware stores provide parking for buggies. We have many wonderful festivals, two universities, and culture galore.

I spent years as an E.C.E. teacher and adore children. Now, that I have one of my own –after 16 heartbreaking years of infertility – my days are filled with finger paints and drinking imaginary tea from tiny pink tea cups. Sleep is a distant memory and writing is my night time balm. My hubby works evening shifts. After my girl is asleep, my imagination runs wild and I write.

I am a Jill of all trades. I've worked as a personal care attendant in a home for young people with physical and developmental challenges. Had a short go as a dishwasher in my younger days, oh joy.  I've also been an engraver, a store manager, a cashier at the Sally Anne, but my last job was as at an office where I worked on databases (I WISH I was a geek.)

As a newer member of Poetry Soup, I am often dazzled by its diversity, the quiet, shy voices, the bellows in the foreground, the cackles in the corners. There is so much talent here! I love the contests run by its members as I enjoy a challenge.

Nice to meet you!  Looking forward to growing together, as writers and friends.

Hugs, Cyndi

It’s 10

She spins on her futon, dreaming
arms spread,  fingers         fishfishfishing  for me

but I’m not                             there

those legs are at 5 and 7    tw    tw    twitching

She’s been asleep since 8
But will awake at 11
then again at

    2

My daughter

              3

                  moving

                         clockwise,

                                following

                                       her future,

                                             punctually, soon she’ll be

                                            4

                                                attending class,

                                                     raise your hand,

trace the letter, do it better

                                                                  Miss, recess, bell,

                                                                      Sweetheart, don’t slam the     door

                                                                                                         9

                                                                                      will come up suddenly
                                                                                      leave me missing

                                                                         6
                                                              tooth fairy,
                                                  sleep overs, yes, sure
no no                       why,    please, just a few more,
                make believe,                              four leaf clovers...

                                                                                               ... then at

                                                                                                                     12

                                                                                            after an argument
                                                                                   about friends, stupid rules
                                                                                          she’ll yell, I hate you
                                                                                       that I’m too calculating
                                                                                                          old, cruel

But tonight
I am the wanted

    1

and so I hold her close
sooth a brow
kiss her frown, sweetly we spoon
then wisely I'll dismiss the knowing moon

*I really don't know what to call this... is there a form called weird experimental? LOL. I am not sure if this communicates what I see/feel... all comments welcome! FIRE IN THE HOLE! LOL! I usually don't enjoy this kind of .... free fall poetry... but I had this in me. Should I just keep this to myself? Is it too strange?

I shall promptly inform PS that they are required by law to post a new form named the above and if not, I'm confident there will be some sort of severe penalty (although I haven't the slightest idea what) We'll start from there. Then there's the magazines...

Thanks chum! PS- I think its great that the pope is from Argentina. Perhaps it will bring more attention to the country, a better understanding and insight into its people. Then again, lol, I'm a dreamer/idealist... hopeless and hopeful :D

So, 1) I think I'll leave it up, may try this again, explore as I wish and I may blog about free style poets, past and present, and the vast style of free styling. 2) I will write a swan poem! I can see the swan, not intentional, but will do one. So... lol...thank you!
  1. Date: 3/15/2013 5:24:00 PM
Oh! i see the swan too! how lovely! I think you could call this a shape poem, or free verse. love and hugs, Catie :) PS~ that little sweetie sleeping half on and half off the bed is adorable! :)

cyndi, you can never be too strange! strange is interesting...I LOVE this because I'm very much into experimental poetry myself at the moment, bored with the same old same old, I just posted one last night and wasn't sure what to label it but I put it under free verse and I would also call this free verse...btw how did you manage to do the line spacing? when I tried to get mine as I wanted it I couldn't do it...

I was thinking of labeling it free verse, but sometimes I think free verse should have sub-categories. I was reading some beat poetry, which always makes me wanna try on a hat, if you know what I mean. Thanks for the comments, Francine! Hope spring comes soon! :)
