Basho

An old silent pond...
A frog jumps into the pond,
splash! Silence again.

Autumn moonlight—
a worm digs silently
into the chestnut.

Lightning flash—
what I thought were faces
are plumes of pampas grass.

Yosa Buson

A summer river being crossed
how pleasing
with sandals in my hands!

Light of the moon
Moves west, flowers' shadows
Creep eastward.

In the moonlight,
The color and scent of the wisteria
Seems far away.

Kobayaski Issa

O snail
Climb Mount Fuji,
But slowly, slowly!

Trusting the Buddha, good and bad,
I bid farewell
To the departing year.

Everything I touch
with tenderness, alas,
pricks like a bramble.

Natsume Soseki

Over the wintry
forest, winds howl in rage
with no leaves to blow.

The crow has flown away:
swaying in the evening sun,
a leafless tree.

Recent Poems

In the coolness
of the empty sixth-month sky...
the cuckoo’s cry. - Masaoka Shiki

Whitecaps on the bay:
A broken signboard banging
In the April wind. - Richard Wright

Lily:
out of the water
out of itself - Nick Virgilio

ground squirrel
balancing its tomato
on the garden fence - Don Eulert

As the wind does blow
Across the trees, I see the
Buds blooming in May

I walk across sand
And find myself blistering
In the hot, hot heat

Falling to the ground,
I watch a leaf settle down
In a bed of brown.

It’s cold—and I wait
For someone to shelter me
And take me from here.

I hear crackling
Crunch, of today’s new found day
And know it won’t last

Falling to the ground,
I watch a leaf settle down
In a bed of brown.

A cricket disturbed
the sleeping child; on the porch
a man smoked and smiled.

I'm turning over
look out and give me room there
you cricket, you.

Remember, haiku is more than a type of poem; it is a way of looking at the very nature of existence.

How NOT to write haiku:
My, Suzette Gazette's, resent pathetic efforts which don't wow or hold a punch!

licking honey off
my fingers tips –
stiff joints

virgin green buds
on the bare stems -
pruned rose bushes

old church bells chime
in the late afternoon air –
a summer bride

These 3 "haiku" are included in the haibun, Summer Bride, which I wrote just for fun - not contest entry.

HAPPY QUILLS!

So true, the way the haiku poets looked at nature was as an outgrowth of God, they were primarily Shinto Buddhists. Alot of the differences in english rewrites of ancient or modern haiku come from the choice of translator. Japanese is a tonal language, so reading what is written outloud IN Japanese can change the meaning of the write through intonation alone.

Thank you, Debbie, for the input - I am learning something new every day. I did not know that the translations made such a difirence. Love, Su

haiku is not capitalized [except for proper nouns] or punctuated as a sentence because it is meant to be a 'snippet' NOT a complete thought, open to the reader mind. The reader may write/make/concieve the moment before and the moment after THAT'S why you don't use a period because the is NO BEGINNING or end to creation

Basho frog haiku alone has perhaps 100's of slightly different translations. And there are actual 'content' reasons for not capiatlizing or punctuating which is often done by English writer coming from old school poetry formate of capitalizing the first word of every line.
