About CYNDI MACMILLAN
(Show Details...)
Bloggers Photo Writing a biography irks me. How much to reveal? What tidbits to conceal?

The Basics: I’m a 45 year-old, stay-at-home mom of an adorable two year old girl. I’m happily married to a wonderful man who is my living contradiction, the quiet to my loud, the calm to my frantic. Life continually amuses, bemuses and confuses me.

My first poem, which I wrote at five, was entitled, “Lov is Magik” and my father kept the fading, folded paper I scribbled it upon in his wallet for decades. I have tinkered in poetry ever since, but my main passion is fiction. My short stories have been published in the local papers. Occasionally, I dabble with creative non-fiction. I have a several chapters of a book completed which I’m hoping to submit to Avalon Books.

Despite years of living in Ontario, I will always consider myself foremost a Montrealer. Now living in Waterloo County, home of Research in Motion, maker of the Blackberry, I am content in our downsized apartment which is close to uptown, but overlooks Laurel Creek.  Though considered Canada’s Silicon Valley, the city is surrounded by a picturesque countryside filled with Mennonites. It is not uncommon to see a Mercedes Benz carefully pass a horse drawn wagon. Even our local hardware stores provide parking for buggies. We have many wonderful festivals, two universities, and culture galore.

I spent years as an E.C.E. teacher and adore children. Now, that I have one of my own –after 16 heartbreaking years of infertility – my days are filled with finger paints and drinking imaginary tea from tiny pink tea cups. Sleep is a distant memory and writing is my night time balm. My hubby works evening shifts. After my girl is asleep, my imagination runs wild and I write.

I am a Jill of all trades. I've worked as a personal care attendant in a home for young people with physical and developmental challenges. Had a short go as a dishwasher in my younger days, oh joy.  I've also been an engraver, a store manager, a cashier at the Sally Anne, but my last job was as at an office where I worked on databases (I WISH I was a geek.)

As a newer member of Poetry Soup, I am often dazzled by its diversity, the quiet, shy voices, the bellows in the foreground, the cackles in the corners. There is so much talent here! I love the contests run by its members as I enjoy a challenge.

Nice to meet you!  Looking forward to growing together, as writers and friends.

Hugs, Cyndi

POETS WILL GET THIS (especially for Scribe)
Blog Posted:2/3/2013 6:52:00 PM

Some time ago, Scribe put up a thought provoking blog. Gotta say, I love thought provoking blogs! Many times I’ll read them and not answer, simply because I don’t have an answer to give, at least for a time.

Now, Scribe asked when we define ourselves as a poet.

Truthfully, I’ve only recently begun to consider myself a poet, though I’ve written poetry for decades. There seemed to be a need to restrict my role as a writer, as though by categorizing myself as a poet I’ve somehow turned my back on other forms of writing.

I now see this as a ridiculous way to think.

It’s like saying that because I’m a mother, I’m no longer a dreamer or a lover.

So, I’ve been pondering Scribe’s blog all this while (Hi Scribe :-) )

Then, I remembered a poem by Gregory Corso, beat poet, and I thought to myself ONLY POETS WILL REALLY GET THIS. I think the majority of readers will nod, might even say, “huh, weird.” Or “Pretty intense.” But I think it's only a poet who will grasp all the nuances of the following free verse.... the full flavour and wit of the wordplay.

Let me know what you think....

Poets Hitchhiking on the Highway

By Gregory Corso

Of course I tried to tell him

but he cranked his head

     without an excuse.

I told him the sky chases

     the sun

And he smiled and said:

     "What's the use."

I was feeling like a demon

     again

So I said: "But the ocean chases

     the fish."

This time he laughed

     and said: "Suppose the

          strawberry were

               pushed into a mountain."

After that I knew the

     war was on--

So we fought:

He said: "The apple-cart like a

broomstick-angel

  snaps & splinters

  old dutch shoes."

I said: "Lightning will strike the old oak

  and free the fumes!"

He said: "Mad street with no name."

I said: "Bald killer! Bald killer! Bald killer!"

He said, getting real mad,

  "Firestoves! Gas! Couch!"
I said, only smiling,
"I know God would turn back his head
If I sat quietly and thought."
We ended by melting away,
     hating the air!

Do you feel this one? Really deeply? Did you chuckle, feel slightly dazzled, envious and then say, Bang on! Then, methinks  you’re a poet!

XOX

Cyndi - I did feel all of what you mentioned though I don't have a clue as to what he is talking about and I agree with Scribe's comment...Also I would never, ever be so foolish and arrogant as to call myself a poet...even if I became famous someday and was widely read centuries after my death (dream on, fool!) To me, its like any other 'art' form...a journey, a constant striving for perfection that of course will never be achieved...which I believe is the whole point of it all...I'm sure I'm making absolutely no sense here...

As far as 'interpreting' poems goes, I have trouble with Mother Goose...

I had a conversation with my husband and it almost ran on similar lines. He said something about an idiot driver that nearly hit us, I came out with something unrelated, he looked at me very puzzled and said that was poetic where did it come from, I said 'my bowels it was the fear of nearly getting crunched.' We had a nonsense chat and then he turned to me again puzzled and said 'You know this writing STUFF you do, I think you may be a poet after all' I need no more confirmation than that.

He's refusing to be cliche. He's not about to let no one tell him how to write, and he's vocal. There's no right or wrong way to do it...those are some the things I got out of it. Create outside the box!

I think that the author uses nonsense as meaning. It's bizarre and hilarious but deep; it shows his humor mocking his own writing ....which is directed at himself as much as anyone else. I'm quite surprised...this is something new for me. Dont get me wrong: Im not talking about the nonsense (I've mastered it... LOL!). Im talking about the possibility...the "literary option" of ridiculizing our own poetry. Thanks for introducing Mr Corso to me; Im going to google his poems.

An itty-bitty chuckle... How are you "Miss all time dazzling Cyndi M., I love the blog, and the poetry principals of one's thoughts and journey of discovery. I remember when my friend Scribe composed a brief question about this subject a while back... always~ LINDA

I let out a smile. Then I read it a second time, shook my head and smiled because for the most part I'm unsure where they are coming from. I only understood the sky chasing the sun, the ocean chasing the fish and the lightning freeing the fumes. Sounds like a bunch of ranting to me. The guy who said "the sky chases the sun provoked the man who cranked his head or should I say the man who said "what's the use" provoked him. I guess it's just however you chose to see things. There's no definite answer to anything... the more I read this the more unsure I am haha I keep shaking my head. Entertaining poem though it's like watching Robot Chicken <3
