WHY DO WE WRITE OR READ POETRY? "Rocket-boosters" to brain!
Blog Posted:1/16/2013 6:04:00 AM

Research has found that reading poetry, in particular, increases activity in the right hemisphere of the brain, an area concerned with “autobiographical memory”, helping the reader to reflect on and reappraise their own experiences in light of what they have read. The academics said this meant the classics were more useful than self-help books. The works of Shakespeare and Wordsworth are “rocket-boosters” to the brain and better therapy than self-help books, researchers will say this week.

POETRY IS AN ECHO

Streaked with fresh tears shining in the silver light
Of the moon reflecting off the windowpane
A rendezvous of sounds whisper in the night
Dark shadows flit into the overgrown lane
Of my mind; echoing the words; taunting me
Grappling with the visions to please set me free
Crumbled in frustration of inspiration
I dance with the shadows in liberation

Inspired by this QUOTE by Carl Sandberg: "Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance."

I worked in a factory. Mundane living was not my forte. I started writing again to kill the boredom and do something creative. Politicians were an easy target for sarcasm, children for touching the heart, and society for its ills.

I know..I am full of words...and they fly by whenever I rest, mediate pray..and poetry is a nice way to let them out!

Interesting since I must say that Shakespeare's work did not really appeal to me personally. Thanks for the info. love phyl

It probably explains why I have the tendency to write a poem to help me remember things I need to know (such as Newton's Laws)!

That is interesting, Sharon. But if you come to think of it, poetry is the ideal vehicle to convey or consolidate information.

Good question Su..these two lines are from one of my many poems on this topic ..And yet, driven by this creative itch,/ Each day,I ,this word tapestry must stitch (from Poet's Progress) from my kindle ebook 'Strand-on Poetry' .I guess though it maybe different for each of us, this is my conclusion after the many hundreds of blogs I published here over the past five years or so on why poets and artists create .Rgds Brian

I have been asked what it is a about poetry which had always held a fascination for me. Now we know it is "good" for us :-)

This Su, is an excellent write---it is, after all, that struggle to see, to find, to look for the resolution even if unresolved....that will set us free--for we have tried and will never give up.
