Epiphanies
Blog Posted:1/7/2013 7:24:00 AM

Last Sunday was the last day the 12 day of Christmas, the feast of the Epiphany in the Catholic church.

Since my church honors all faith our sermon was about EPIPHANIES. Truly a necessary subject for poets in particular to understand. Most of us HAVE epiphanies "ah HA" moments almost constantly and that is HOW and why we write. haiku is ALL about the epiphany! The grammatically unconnected line in a haiku is meant to SHOW the reader the poets epiphany with further sensory input thus drawing the reader into the poets moment, the beauty of God in nature..ahhhhhhhhhhhh...

There are many interesting traditions involved with this day, we have all experienced the gift giving. In some traditions no gifts are given until this day. The Wisemen [the Magi, or the Three Kings] brought gold, frankincense and myrrh. These men are symbols of all man's search for a savior and for me the search for the savior within myself.

Here is a fav Epiphany of mine by a fav poet of ours.

A Dream in the Mist by Carrie Richards

The mountain peaks in colored sugar coat
Of pinks and blues and lilac violet hues
The sky, just before sunrise, all windless and clear
The day is misty, bitter cold, and crystal sheen
But I am warmed by one small ray of golden morning light

From high upon a perch of snow top crest
A lone stag with graceful legs that fly
Carving out a quiet trail, like fleeting wind
The sound so soft, the hush of whispered steps

He halts, and looks at me with logic's eyes
And seems to smile in recognition,
His golden crown of antlers, gleam in morning sun
Just when I thought my crystal world would splinter
He tilts his head, and bids me to come
And like an eagle's wing, remote and sure
He darts away, just like a bird
Without a sound

Beauty of the wind....beauty of pure grace
I run after him, panting and breathless,
Through the glimmering, in search of answers
But, I cannot keep up, as he disappears without a trace
And still not wringing the answers from the slightest sound
Yet, I am left alone, and feel at peace

What is one of your favorite poetic Epiphanies??

I think it was Bob Marley who said "Don't worry..be happy!" [Easy for him to say when ganja is part of his religion! LOL] but difficult or not it is true we do make the choice of where to place our focus of attention. Ligh & Love Carrie [shhh it's why I write it over & over to remind myself to BE Light & Love]

Debbie, I am so flattered that you faved a poem I myself had almost forgotten, and found something in it that was worthy of your own memory. I have found many epiphanies right here on PS and in other moving pieces of poetry. And recently when I most needed to hear it, I heard someone say something like this..."you can choose to live in the darkness of your saddest moments, or you can choose to live in the bright light of all the good" ...I'm not saying it exactly word for word....but the jist of it is something of which I often need to be reminded.

My Sunday epiphany was to agree with my minister that every time a child is born it is a holy night.
