Bloggers Photo Writing a biography irks me. How much to reveal? What tidbits to conceal?

The Basics: I’m a 45 year-old, stay-at-home mom of an adorable two year old girl. I’m happily married to a wonderful man who is my living contradiction, the quiet to my loud, the calm to my frantic. Life continually amuses, bemuses and confuses me.

My first poem, which I wrote at five, was entitled, “Lov is Magik” and my father kept the fading, folded paper I scribbled it upon in his wallet for decades. I have tinkered in poetry ever since, but my main passion is fiction. My short stories have been published in the local papers. Occasionally, I dabble with creative non-fiction. I have a several chapters of a book completed which I’m hoping to submit to Avalon Books.

Despite years of living in Ontario, I will always consider myself foremost a Montrealer. Now living in Waterloo County, home of Research in Motion, maker of the Blackberry, I am content in our downsized apartment which is close to uptown, but overlooks Laurel Creek.  Though considered Canada’s Silicon Valley, the city is surrounded by a picturesque countryside filled with Mennonites. It is not uncommon to see a Mercedes Benz carefully pass a horse drawn wagon. Even our local hardware stores provide parking for buggies. We have many wonderful festivals, two universities, and culture galore.

I spent years as an E.C.E. teacher and adore children. Now, that I have one of my own –after 16 heartbreaking years of infertility – my days are filled with finger paints and drinking imaginary tea from tiny pink tea cups. Sleep is a distant memory and writing is my night time balm. My hubby works evening shifts. After my girl is asleep, my imagination runs wild and I write.

I am a Jill of all trades. I've worked as a personal care attendant in a home for young people with physical and developmental challenges. Had a short go as a dishwasher in my younger days, oh joy.  I've also been an engraver, a store manager, a cashier at the Sally Anne, but my last job was as at an office where I worked on databases (I WISH I was a geek.)

As a newer member of Poetry Soup, I am often dazzled by its diversity, the quiet, shy voices, the bellows in the foreground, the cackles in the corners. There is so much talent here! I love the contests run by its members as I enjoy a challenge.

Nice to meet you!  Looking forward to growing together, as writers and friends.

Hugs, Cyndi

MERRY CHRISTMAS! NEW TRADITIONS. WHAT ARE YOURS?
Blog Posted:12/24/2012 1:16:00 PM

My family is creating new traditions each year. Oxymoron?

First Food Tradition:

Hubby worked for Sooters Photography for over 16 years. The owner and his family were from India. Every Christmas they would put on a huge Christmas party (though many in the plant celebrated Diwali.)

The spread would include the typical Canadian holiday fare: turkey and stuffing, a ham, potatoes and gravy, Christmas cakes. But it also had a large assortment of middle eastern delights! Samosas! Curries! Butter chicken and basmati rice... oh, yummmmmmmmm!

Well, its been years since Sooters closed. Yet I still crave what became a Christmas tradition. So every year I make sure to add spice to my holy-days.

This year my husband and I had our first date since our girl’s birth. We went to a shop which sells British meat pies. The place was recently bought by someone from India and she makes... oh Heaven!.... Butter Chicken Meat Pies. I have no idea what the fat/calorie intake is on one of these puppies, but needless to say, it would probably make a cheesecake look slimming! I almost had a when Sally Met Harry restaurant moment... if ya know what I mean (wink wink)

Second Food tradition:

When I was working, one of my co-workers told me she had pizza for Christmas dinner. I was shocked! I’d never heard of the such.

Well, it had taken her nine years to have her son. She said, “I’m not spending Christmas in the kitchen. I want to spend it with him, playing games, watching a movie, laughing, talking... we’re happy!”

Then, after 16 years of infertility, I had MY girl.

Now, I GET what she said.

So, low and behold, the Christmas Lasagna came to be!

On Christmas Eve (today) I cook non-stop. There is a ham in one slowcooker and a mashed potato casserole in another slowcooker. The lasagna takes me over two hours to make. Two pounds of meat! Copious amounts of cheese.

Tomorrow we have muffins for breakfast. Ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch (late) and our Christmas lasagna with a salad, dinner rolls and a cake. I cheat and use paper plates. I spend less than ½ an hour with meal prep on Christmas day. Another ½ an hour cleaning. That’s it. The rest is spent with my family.

A New Family Tradition

I play WITH my daughter. We go for a walk and bring Christmas to the animals (strung cereal, homemade bird feeders, nuts for squirrels)

We listen to music, read books, play games and talk...

What are YOUR holy-day tradition?

Are they new to your family or long held, passed down from generations to generation?

Also, I am planning to judge my contest on Dec 27th! Sorry for the delay... all those who wrote with my requests in mind, are guaranteed a placement :) I'm so delighted by what I'm reading, but like many, I am focusing on family right now.

Love sent to all my soup friends... may your celebrations be as simple or as extravagant as you wish, filled with either peaceful contemplation and spiritual moments or joyful noise, laughter and merriment!

XOX

For the past 26 years, we have had Christmas dinner on the 24th and bithday party on the 25th for my son James. He does not like cake, so we have a mint chocolate chip ice cream castle, with a little cake and ice cream cones for turrets. And a party with his friends in June for half-year. Christmas presents in the morning and his birthday presents in the evening.

Quiche, one of us makes quiche. When it was my turn to have everyone over my youngest daughter made the quiche since I was baking both the turkey and the ham. This year she is making the turkey and the Ham and I have just finished making quiche to take to her house tomorrow.Ever since she was 14 and it was just she and I , we always cooked a ham and we made quiche for Christmas, neither one of us is that fond of Turkey. Now that her family is larger we need both ham and turkey.... and quiche

gosh, I forgot you had a contest to judge. I wonder which it was. well, Cyndi, depending on who is visiting, I do elaborate or very simple. tomorrow is just my daughter's little family coming at noon. I have no presents to open. My cat and new TV for Black Friday were my presents this year. I adore opening gifts but I guess I will forgo it this year. I also enjoy seeing everyone open gifts when my daughter's family shows up. and at least I have a few little things to look forward to from my daughter. This year's dinner will be very easy. Hawaiian haystacks. just a chicken mixture over rice and smothered with cheese, veggies, rice noodles and pineapple chunks, and sesveral bought desserts.

Yo Cynster, Still stick with relative traditional fare, roast beast and ham (no turkey it was just Thanksgiving!) But after reading yours, if I leave now, should be able to be there by mealtime so set an extra plate--not to worry, I entertain myself easily--til tomorrow love!!
