Poetry spoken aloud -a personal view

Blog Posted:11/29/2016 6:10:00 AM

A couple of recent responses have prompted this blog post and hopefully will help those folk who have kindly been supporting my ' how your poem reads aloud ' contests (43 so far)

MY TAKE ON OUR ARTFORM.may be precised as:-

If a poem is not heard aloud it is as lifeless as a butterfly in a cocoon. When it is read aloud , it lives .True poetry is self-transcending in its inspiration but it remains incomplete without being read.

For those interested to read more of where I am coming from with my premiere contests I have eloborated my viewpoint in my  2016 Amazon kindle guide(price 99cents or its equivalent - the nearest Amazon allow to foc)

POETRY an as is happening said aloud

For me, reading poetry aloud gives it another dimension, an alter ego if you will. I suppose that there are poems that can just stand on its own with being read from the reader's mind, but if given a voice, it can also actually give an added layer and even meaning to the piece, and can further prod deeper into the reader's mind and heart.

Actually, reading these comments gave me a cool idea for a contest (not one I'd sponsor.) Imagine this: a free verse poem written by the judge WITHOUT LINE BREAKS. The poets add punctuation and line breaks to the poem and then add a recording. (unfortunately couldn't be for non PMs! SIgh) but it would be cool... Maybe more of an anthology than a contest? Then, finally, the judge includes the poem with the cuts how she/he intended with a reading! It would be interesting to hear/read all the variances in style and interpretation.

In the land of my far, far away blog ideas, and I was thinking of doing a blog on punctuation -- I actually thought doing something along these lines before... wherein I would post a particular write without any punctuation, read it and then post several versions of it with punctuation in diff places. But I got so lazy, so I ended up just copy/pasting fun images about punctuation

Hope you can go for it! I didn't even consider if it showed up on the contest page! Can you let us know? Cheers!

Brian, good discussion. Certainly, the spoken word looms large - witness the age-old human tradition of oral histories and tales. Where I disagree is with the assertion that it *has* to be one way or the other, when it comes to poetry. You certainly are fair by saying that it's your take on things; can't argue with that. However, to say that if "not heard aloud it is as lifeless as a butterfly in a cocoon" - here I would counter by saying that some poems leap off the page, vibrant with life. Also, while there may be huge surprises in hearing the author speak some poems, others have a clear rhythm that is easily read off the printed page, just as the author intended. Cheers, Doug. : )

As to other people's treatments of our poems, I'm not trying to get away from the importance of the author doing the reading - I see this as pretty much trumping all else. Yet - and I guess this is assuming virtually unlimited time - to, in effect, "roll the dice," and see how things would turn out with others doing the reading, could have value too. Never know what's going to happen.

FJ, - there are so many variables that I think it will come down, every time, to the individual poem, writer, and reader. I agree with all the "could" and "may be" statements. My wife and I don't have any kids, but I can write about losing a child. Then think how that may affect someone who lost one.

I'm also thinking that perhaps I am foolish in generalizing in any way. "Just as the author intended" - it would be fascinating to write poems and then hear a variety of other people ready them.

A fellow Minnesotan, Robert Bly, is amazing in person, I had the privilege to attend a reading at the University of Minnesota he gave a few years back ( I took Ma, she loved it!) Bly is accompanied by a soft backbeat duo on bongo drums of Caribean Heritage, unbelievable! jimbo

A poem(like a child) has a life of its own once it is 'berthed'.Each time it is read a unique 'as is happening 'occurs. As some have said the 'happening ' maybe 'internalized' but in my experience when it is read aloud ,preferably to others ear a heightened experience ,a enhanced 'happening' via the voice and the listening ear .Pollock called it ,in regard to art, ' an arrested moment in space ' .

Brian, I like it both ways. I almost prefer reading it since i read fast and most poets read their poetry slowly. Anyway, for me the poetry can be alive in my mind just as well as if it is read aloud. Just my personal opinion. of course, nothing beats hearing the author read it the way HE wants us to hear it. But think of all the dead classic poets. I bet they would turn in their graves to have someone reading their work using stress or intonation that was not what they had in mind when they wrote it!! Nice blog!

I've been to poetry readings and enjoyed them thoroughly. I've enjoyed listening to the readings of Soup poets, too. For me, however, literature is meant for the page to be read and internalized, digested by the mind and slowly allow to be heard by the heart (I know. Gushy) The literary arts also include fiction. I can enjoy reading many classics, and many times a movie can actually take away from a novel. The same is true for poetry. A wonderful poem read by someone shy, awkward and uncomfortable with performance can detract from their work, which may shimmer and delight on the page, but fall flat on a stage. I believe poetry breaths all on its own, if attention is given to each word.

For me, who cannot speak his own poetry aloud, this is a difficult subject. I tend to partly agree. 1) Some poetry is meant to be on paper, to enjoy the play with words, the alliteration, the inner rhyme and so on. 2) Some poetry, like poetry SLAM, or Spoken Word, or Lyrics, are written with a different purpose and read aloud are better (although they are fine on paper). I am used to write both. And luckily I have a boyfriend to read my poetry aloud if necessary.

So is a painting in a museum, that is not interpreted by the painter, also somewhat incomplete or even lifeless?

Painting or poem Anthony ,it is a two way process.A a unique happening each time and the experience will differ according to mood etc.

To me, poetry sings just as well from the printed page and is far from lifeless.
