I retired from a nursing career to live a simple life in the country and write. I self
published my first book of poetry, The River of Liquid Dreams. Small presses published two more, In The Presence of Shadows, and Faith Like A Dandelion. I had the honor of having one of my poems recited in a documentary produced by the Canadian Institute on Child Health, The Healing Journey. I give poetry readings and judge performance poetry competitions.

LETTERS TO POETS CONTEST JUDGED

Blog Posted:6/20/2014 8:34:00 AM

Wow! This was a hard contest to do. I received so many amazing poems. It was fun to find out about so many of you and what poets inspire you to pick up a pen and keep writing, and writing.

I had requested no names on the poems, preferring to judge blind. For several years I judged slam competitions, some of them with thousands in prize money. At first it wasn't too hard, poets came in from all over the country and they were all strangers. Judging was all about the poetry and performance. Then I began to know the poets personally, connected between slams. When they returned to compete, judging became much harder. I struggled to know I was giving scores only on the quality of the poetry and not letting personal like for and respect of the poet influence me.

I have come to know many poets here, some are personal favorites, and some I have connected with beyond the soup. I wanted to be sure I was not giving scores based on personal feelings so those that entered with names attached received honorable mention. Their poems were just too good to not mention.

I am sorry if anybody is upset over their poem not placing, or the placement it received. Remember these are only my thoughts. Another would probably choose differently.

Many hugs and thanks to everyone who participated.

Here is the list of winners:

Actually I can't figure out how to get the list of winners on this blog. Thought I could copy and move but that doesn't seem to be working. I am not very computer savvy. Guess you will have to look at the list itself.

Hi Monterey, due to the 700 character restriction I couldn't introduce myself as I wanted too. I just wanted to show that competition lists can be posted but that 700 restraint is a problem, and I've just noticed for replies its down to 400, bah humbug. I find the no line breaks a pain in the neck too, spoils presentation. Hope I've helped, Mick

Yes, congratulations to all the winners, and to all who entered. You all wrote beautiful, creative poems based on my idea. I am glad I was able to inspire such a unique outpouring of words. I will be leaving for Florida tomorrow due to a health crisis with my uncle. I will try my best to comment on all the entries I received in as timely a manner as I can. Again, thank you to all of you who participated. I enjoyed reading every poem.

Congratulations to all the winners! There some amazing entries for your contest, Monterey. Emily Dickinson's words haunt me often. Thank you very much for my placement. Indeed, it must have been hard to judge this one! Love and blessings to all, Carolyn

Monterey, I have these same struggles that you have mentioned when it comes to judging and that is why I judge blind too, and still I sometimes can know just instinctively who the poets are that have participated in my contests. Thanks for my #5. After seeing some of the stellar poems in your contest, I knew mine would not deserve a top spot!! But I am glad you liked it and I thank you for the inspiration to do it. I once figured out how to post a winners' list but I can't remember how I did it. You need to use one of the icons at the top of the bar where you post the blog!! (I have been writing little comments as I read your manuscript. Will soupmail you sometime)
