1. A new poem, dated.
2. No names.
3. Write the name of the religion/sect.
4. At least 12 lines long.
5. The poem must be a faithful religious poem, not just a poem about a religion.
6. No farces, fakes, or satire. Serious poetry, please.

Prizes

Second Prize, Glory
Third Prize, Glory
Twelve Honorable Mentions

Preparing Your Entry

Submit one copy of your poem online. Format your poem. Please make your entry easy to read — no illustrations or fancy fonts.

Canadian Interfaith Conversation: Since 2009, the national leaders of Canada’s faith traditions have been meeting & working together.Leaders of the Christian, Jewish,Muslim,Baha’i,Sikh,Hindu, Buddhist & First Nations traditions,on behalf of their communities, are speaking out against extreme poverty, climate change, nuclear weapons & the small arms trade. They are speaking,in a respectful, inclusive and collaborative way FOR all people of this country and the world. Faith communities believe, in the Name of the Divine Imperative, that all children, women & men should have the food that they need, housing, education, treatment for health issues, clean water & a future with a sustainable environment.

Great idea, Roy! I am a Christian and I can easily write about another faith. Islam, Judaism and Christianity all share the same God, but by a different name. To help clarify for others who are confused, what you are speaking of is pure-love that moves us all based on a belief in some kind of higher power, that we are not alone? So, when we look at it in this context, it may make it easier for us to "slip on the shoes" of those who follow a different faith. In Canada, we have the Interfaith Council of Churches. They meet to better understand each other's faiths to promote both unity and an appreciation for diversity amongst us. http://www.councilofchurches.ca/interfaith/ Awesome contest!!

I would accept an Ethical Society poem. That is an organized and codified belief system often considered Humanist.

I think we need to draw a line between a belief system and a religion. A religion is generally a codified belief system. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_belief

Hmmm... would you consider Humanism a religion? It has a system of beliefs and humanists are dedicated to the betterment of mankind. They, too, are devout.

'Roy, how does one write a faithful poem and not ABOUT a religion if one does not believe in that religion? I think this is a contest for non Christians then, right? What about the religion of simply believing in a creator. What would that be called?

Andrea, for some idea, please read my comment about the Canadian Interfaith Council. You can write passionately, a written prayer from the point of view of the Algonquin Peoples. "Spirit Guide, bring your winds to heal your peoples. Stop the wars..."

You could probably also write a poem for one of the ancient religions, Egyptian, Greek or Roman, or a Native American religion, for example.

My intention was primarily to give a voice to non-Christians, yes. However, it might be possible to write a poem for a religion like animism w/o being a believer. Certainly the major ethical religions are so complex that a non-believer would likely be caught out.
