I TRIED but could not keep it to only 10 top ten/ Andaree winners - Andrea Dietrich's Blog

About Andrea Dietrich

Bloggers Photo

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

I TRIED but could not keep it to only 10 top ten/ Andaree winners

Blog Posted:10/17/2015 8:28:00 PM

Well, I got my contest judged. I had said I would have only ten on my numbered list, but I could not narrow it down. I ended up with 15 in the top ten. (Then five placements from 11 to 15 and the rest HM's). Please see the winners posted at the contest page. Ironically, a person who had given me two really good wins this week himself ended up first place. I know how that is going to look to some of the people around here, but for what it's worth, I had no clue who I was giving the top wins to. I can only say that I kept going back and forth, back and forth on those top wins until I ended up placing them the way I did, and that number one poem really spoke to me. The state of the world today is a crying shame, and Silent One using my form to say it in such a poetic way really wowed me.

Also I wanted to say: There were a number of people getting HM's who normally have placed higher with me.  Some of them simply failed to follow one of the basic rules of the form (such as using the same line both at the front and at the end of the poem or using the correct number of syllables or using a one-syllable word in the middle of the poem), Others got HM's simply because I was trying hard to keep my list shorter than usual, and I liked other poems better.

I was very pleased with everyone because nobody wrote a bad poem and the one disqualified simply did not write an Andaree.

Thanks to everyone who supported my contest. A lot of great poems were entered! If you have any questions why I placed you as I did, you can just Soupmail me!

Ralph Sergi just showed me his entry that was too late to get into my contest. You did such a nice job, Ralph. The least I can do is show it. Here is his Andaree:

: Come listen how the thunder rolls with its might
Like distant drums it echoes through the night
Rain has pulsed a steady stream
To ponder and dream
Create a
Theme
For my dream
Listening to the sound
Like the rhythm in a round
I have captured my dream by daylight
Come listen how the thunder rolls with its might

Hello, Andie. Thank you for the inspiration and for my placement. It was my first time to do an Andaree and it was fun writing it. Hope you'll continue hosting contests as they stimulate the creative juices and teach me along the process. Congrats to all your winners! hugs!

Andrea, congrats to all your winners. I know you have integrity and pity those who think you don't. Glad to see you enforced your rules. You are blessing to this site and very considerate of you to show Ralph's poem here.

(there were a few people who broke a rule and I did not catch it!) As for the many people who used near rhymes, I want to blog about that sometime. It seems that many people have different ideas about real rhymes and what they are. I was fairly lax in my judgement of rhymes and just mostly went off how well i liked the poems.

rob, I messed up with my last contest and placed a few high that I shoudn't have.I am very sorry about that but it's too much for me to think about judging it all over again. I am just letting it all be. Thanks for your support, a true friend.
Date: 10/18/2015 5:04:00 PM
Congratulations to all the winners. There were some awesome entries. I appreciate the HM but took mine down as it was done incorrectly and was not an Andaree. I will have to work on the form. Ralph's is really nice. Cheers, Connie

"we" did not ALL know about it! I am sure many others do not give a rat's ass about knowing every day what the POTD' is. (I'm always very surprised when someone comes to me saying congrats on my POTD!) I go directly to my comments each day and never have time to check out poems of the day unless I see poets are being congratulated for them. Then I too join in with my congrats to that poet!
