Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Those CRAZY syllable counters!! Use your INSTINCTS! Revised

Blog Posted:10/17/2015 5:48:00 PM

First of all, on a side note, I want to begin going through my contest now. I always wait till it's all full and then start seeing the poems for the first time. You still have at least an hour to check your syllables, etc. I am going to be one of the "strict" judges this time and just place ten but everyone who followed my rules will be on the list.

Ok, I want to talk about syllables, guys!  When I tell you to check yourself with a syllable counter, that does not mean I expect you to have to check every single syllable count. I think more than half the population knows how to sound out syllables. However, there are a few words that are questionable. Sometimes you need a  syllable counter because you honestly might not know the correct thing!  For example, dipthong sounds oy/ ay/ ow/ etc. are seen as ONE syllable. So a word like HOWL is indeed a one syllable word. Don't let the number of letters fool you. OW is the vowel sound and the initial H and the final L blend into the total sound. The sound IRE is one of the most confusing  sounds. Though some people might be pronouncing this word as FI/ RE(er), the whole word is (I believe) more often seen as a one syllable word. I think you just need to  be aware that the long sounds of English : A, E, I O U (with the way they are often represented with more than one letter) are one syllable sounds.. (NOTE: Some people disagree about words like Fire. I would just say, use it as a two -syllable word at your own peril. I have lost competitions for using it as two syllables and just now when I checked  three places online, they were giving it as one syllable, but I suppose someone could find  a source that gives it as two syllables and then reference that source underneath their poem).

Do not TRUST syllable counters! Please, people. Use common sense. Here is an example I recently found with my very own syllable counter that I gave people to use in my contests. Someone wrote the word MANES, as in the "manes" of many horses. Two different syllable counters (mine included) said that the word was pronounced MA/NES. WHAT????? I could not believe it. So I investigated and this is what I found in an online dictionary:

ma·nes

 or Ma·nes  (ma′nez′, mä′nas′)

pl.n.
1. The spirits of the dead, regarded as minor supernatural powers in ancient Roman religion.
2. (used with a sing. verb) The revered spirit of one who has died.

Ok, the poet was talking about manes of horses, not DEAD people!! Manes comes up as two syllables because it is always a two syllable word when entered into a dictionary that way. If you want to see the word mane in the dictionary, it is a singular noun, not normally used in plural form, kind of like HAIR. We don't say people have hairs. We have hair. However, in the case where we are talking about two or more horses, we can say they have MANES. (ONE Syllable).

Please, poets, use common sense. Do not second guess yourself. If a stupid syllable counter is giving a count that you KNOW is wrong, find a syllable counter that is counting your word properly (I finally found one that actually gave manes as one syllable). Put a note at the bottom of your poem that references a word that might be confused by a syllable counter. The judge of your contest may not know your word or realize that their syllable counter is KOOKY.

I am passionate about this topic because I love teaching about pronunciation at the school where I teach, If you have a difference of opinion, I am willing to listen and do research. Like Craig says down here in one of his comments, he found Fire listed at a syllable counter that he trusts. I am just trying to give advice based on my own experiences with publishers and contests. And I remember FIRE,and HOUR (those kinds of words using sounds that some people like to divide into two syllables) can get a poet into trouble. This is why I tell people the specific syllable counter to use in my contests That way we can all be on the same page!

(Sorry this next part did not copy the sounds very well)
Just looked up the most common tripthongs: • Triphthong : 5 closing diphthongs with ‘?’ added on the end.  All of these were listed as two syllables except fire/lire and hour.
- e? + ? = e?? . as in layer, player
- a? + ? = a??. as in lire, fire
- ?? + ? = ???, as in loyal, royal
- ?? + ? = ?u?, as in lower, mower
- a? + ? = au?, as in power, hour.

Thanks Andrea. Most of the time I can figure it out in my head but there are those tricky words and many times they are pronounced slightly different depending on what region you live in.

How many syllables in THANKS. I spent 20 minutes last night seeking a proper count for what I consider to be a two syllable word .... but not the counters.....

I never use syllable counters, flow is what's important for me. Andrea's advice is spot on, trust your instincts.

I am so glad you caught my basic message, just to trust your instincts. Flow is everything, Richard. If a poem flows well, I don't need to be looking at a syllable counter to check it! Unfortunately a lot of editors who publish traditional form poetry are checking things like that, so it's good to understand it in case that is a difficult thing for someone. I have been surprised by the number of people who do not know how to count syllables. This blog hardly does the subject justice. That's for another blog!!
Date: 10/18/2015 3:10:00 PM
Oh Dear, another reason, why some of us old time poetry soupers are so disillusioned, when a perfectly wonderful informative blog is placed here, and the crap it ignites from some folk, is unbelievable. Today's world is all about one upmanship, (the tall poppy syndrome) gee, there are some insecure aspects out there, always working hard to bring someone else down to their level.

Hi, harry. It's lovely to see your kind face at my bog today! I am fine because of people like you and other friends who know who I am and who know my intentions, that I am not trying to be a smarty pants or something like that. I saw something that made me want to inform my fellow poets about syllable counters and I blogged about it. End of story. I appreciate your support and all my friends who support each other just being the sweet people you all are.
Date: 10/18/2015 11:23:00 AM
Very informative blog here, Andrea. I think syllable counters sometimes can give one a false sense of security---that one would think that's the sole authority on such things. It would definitely help to check other references--- good 'ol dictionaries, the one with actual paper, or hmm some would even do that chin thing ;p.

Nikko, I appreciate you coming here. Thanks so much. About syllable counters, I was using one for an entire text in someone's contest on using 101 words. I put the text into three different counters and came up with totally different results. I counted the words out one by one. It turns out, one counter was using -(hypens) as actual word counts. I really hope Soup will do something about their counter!

I'm usually silent over here. And respectful, but sometimes I swear, it's hard to be. Julia, I have noticed that you can be so negative to other people. It bugs the hell out of me right now. It comes across to me that you have such a problem with Andrea (actually with other people as well). Why so? And why oh why do you say "we"? Who are 'we'??? Speak for yourself. Just say "I". I for one (& I think I'm not alone), am grateful for Andrea, for the tips and lessons she gives. If you don't like her blogs/contests, then just stay away from them. Others actually are thankful for them. We all have room for improvement. Please don't be so negative, it attracts & fosters more negativity.

Wise words indeed - thanks for an informative blog. in the past I have fallen foul in contests not only by using the poetry soup syllable counter but also for the difference in the UK/US pronunciation - I always use 'how many syllables' if I am unsure of a word and put on my poem that it has been checked using the syllable counter - at school we teach the students to 'clap' the syllables of a word and that works too.
