Haiku 5-7-5 or NOT?!?

International Haiku Month begins on February 1st.  The challenge is to write one haiku per day.  Then, my thoughts go to the hullabaloo  about the syllable count versus the sound count in Japanese.  So what is a haiku, anyway?  I found this wonderful site that is a good place to start bringing our thoughts to an understanding.  I hope you will take time to read, learn, and comment here about your thoughts.  Then, commit to write a haiku a day on Poetry Soup...however you do it.  Let's commit to celebrate haiku with the rest of the world!

Linda-Marie, I too, was resistant to changing from the 5-7-5 haiku format because I had seen it taught in English classes and on poetry soup as well with the 5-7-5 format. However, after I began trying to understand haiku the way Debbie and Charles were writing it, I started to realize that it is more than syllable count. It has other specific requirements. I have hundreds...maybe thousands of 5-7-5 poems in my haiku files that do not have two important features of haiku...a season word and juxtaposition or breaking away from two of the lines...to make the reader think. I am so still learning! But this article helped me understand WHY some haiku poets are not sticking to the 5-7-5 format. I am going to look at mine SOMEDAY lol and see how many are really haiku and how many need to be moved to a 5-7-5 free verse file! LOL Anyway...it's all FUN!

well Dane Ann I learned on PS about 5/7/5 syllable count so I lean toward that form requirement.. but... Debbie's Haiku challenges are just as interesting and Charles Henderson's also.. if it were me entering I would use the 5/7/5 one..

I will try to check out your link, Dane Ann --thanks for sharing! :d yes haiku is a tricky but Very very intriguing form and I am so challenged by it but oh , what bliss to actually be able to write something satisfying! Me I love to also experiment with it :D

Oh, the world of haik is full of varying opinions. And you don't have to look far! Just check out the Soup. I like the mix. I love that there are purist haiku poets, who keep the original art. Then there is modern haiku and its westernized approach which allows for personification. Just type modern haiku into google and its amazing what wonderful reads you can find out there. I think in trusting your poetic instincts, and applying your 'voice' to whatever form of poetry you try. Have a blast. Glad I read this! Cheers, Cyndi

HI, Dane Ann, it's good to see a post from you before I go off for the evening.Your bio pic is so cheerful looking. Personally I think it is too restrictive to go by syllable counts for haiku. Just doing very tiny "moments in time" poetry that equal out to fewer than 17 syllables is what it's all about. this is how many are now doing them. However, I don't mind contests that call for 5/7/5. The old way is nice too. We do not have the same "system" of speech as the Japanese, so to impose our own syllable system on haiku/senryu is simply making a new kind of poetry form for English speakers! The very small haiku/senryu where you just use fewer than 17 syllables makes more sense.
