Review of Debra Squyres

What a pleasure it was to read Debra’s writing. It’s amazing what you notice when you read most of a persons listed poems over a short period of time. I believe I was through half of her work when I notice something in Debra’s writing that I had seen others work. I was quite frankly disappointed it took me so long to realize it. When Debra writes, she writes from two different places. It’s not an uncommon thing, hence the disappointment. I will start with the one I call the intellectual Debra. Intellectual Debra has some talent and writes some very uplifting pieces as well as some sound advice. Ultimately though, the primary concern of Intellectual Debra is to get her thoughts down in writing. Nothing wrong with that, it’s always good to get them down before you lose them. Eventually in most poems that come from the brain, especially a free verse specialist like Debra, you have to choose to stick with the idea in your head or the flow the poem as created naturally. Intellectual Debra almost always chooses to stick to the idea instead of the flow of the poem. I believe it’s the correct choice to make, after all the idea is why you are writing, it’s important to make sure it’s clearly understood. Her poems are well laid out and easy to follow the thought process at the cost of a little bump in the form here and there that is easy to overlook. Though I took a certain joy in following along with intellectual Debra, I found it’s all too easy to cast her aside for emotional Debra. What better way to show the stark contrast between the two then to say “thoughts only move things in movies.” When reading emotional Debra you can’t help but be caught up in the whirlwind of emotions. You have no choice but to feel the emotions that she so skillfully imprints into her writing. Emotional Debra’s flow and rhythm are virtually flawless making it a seamless transition from reading her work to experiencing it. In closing I encourage you all to keep writing your thoughts and emotions down and when you have time stop by to peek in on either Debra it will be worth your while. next up is vicky tsiluma and if you are interesting in being reviewed send me a soup mail and step in line.

Hi Nathan The question mark was because I went to your name and there were no poems. I had wanted to read and respond to your work. Thanks for initially picking my poem, I do appreciate you liked it. Take care.

I enjoyed your review about Debra... Writing is rooted in both you mentioned in the review: Intellect and emotion. I don't believe in using big words to convey my thoughts nor do I like writing to impress... Thanks for my placement in your contest. I tried reaching out to you via soupmail but soupmail icon is not activated in your page and I could'nt find any of your poem as well to read and comment on. AO

I have always enjoyed reading Debra's work since she came here. I know myself that I write in many different ways. It all depends on the topic and the mindset!! Some flow some don't. Probably I am more prone to enjoy when people use the intellectual approach. But that's just me. I really love it when intellect and emotion come together, and I bet she has that type too!!

i think this is a common phenomenon among writers. You are so good to review our works - your comments helped me look at myself as an outsider.
