Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

What Did You Have For Lunch?

Blog Posted:11/15/2012 3:25:00 PM
Well, since I am big on FOOD, and since I have not blogged in a while, I thought I'd ask you guys: what did you have for lunch today?

This brings me to the reason I brought it up. For the past few years I have put on a little weight and it has really bothered me. I exercise just as much as before. and as for eating, I even cut my calories, but nothing was working. Then  in my spin class two weeks ago, the teacher there was discussing with us a good way to lose weight, especially after age 50,when  our metabolism slows down. Here is what he told me:

To turn your body into a more efficient fuel burning "machine" there is a very simple technique. I have been doing this for over two weeks now, and though I am afraid of scales (Have not stood on one for ages) I think I can tell from the way my clothes fit me, that I am losing some weight. You have to do the following things:

1.  Eat first thing when you wake up, some nutritious breakfast to get your body in gear.

2. EAt small snacks every two or three hours. It is better to eat lots of small meals than three big ones per day. But don'T worry about what you eat. Just eat within reason. If you feel like a burger, just have a burger. and you can add fries, just take it easy on them!

3. After 3 p.m is a very important step. Do NOT eat anything else that is questionable food. Eat CLEAN. that means to eat unprocessed foods, natural foods and good protein (lean chicken and beef, fish ,eggs and good cheese, NOT valveeta or cream cheese or processed cheese)

4. THREE hours before you go to bed, STOP eating. This way, by allowing your body a lot of time to perform its function of burning the calories you put into it earlier in the day, your body will become more efficient at what it does. I am a night owl, so I can eat until 9 p.m!!! and I usually snack on sunflower seeds before 9.

That's all there is to it. No fancy diet. Just remember to eat what you want (within reason) during the day and EAT CLEAN after 3. And don"T eat at all 3 hours before bed. Also, eat as soon as you can upon rising in the morning.

BY the WAY, today here was my wonderful lunch: from Smith's Deli section: a tuna croissant sandwich with a few onion rings and a few tiny taquitos and cream cheese peppers! YUM. So what did YOU have?

I've been described as a light eater. Once it gets light, I start eating. My kids have been busting on me to lose weight. Maybe I'll give this a try.

OH MY! and I know you also had such a bad day. You are a marvel, Victoria.

After reading what everyone else had I'm a little embarrassed to admit I had a cold homemade cheeseburger left over from two that I made last nite (I like them hot or cold) These cheeseburgers were true monsters...'dressed', as we call them here...meaning everything you can find in the fridge and cabinets to go on them...you have to toast the buns to keep them from disintegrating half way thru eating...as usual, my eyes were bigger than my stomach...

Dr. Oz had a woman on his program the other day..She has written a cookbook called "The Hungry Woman's Cookbook"..She gave some ideas on how to expand the food we eat to make it look and feel like more but reduce the caloric content of food..Sara

I think you must be a very healthy eater, Nette. I am not a breakfast eater either but everyone really should do it!
Date: 11/16/2012 1:40:00 PM
Great advice Andrea! Yep, smaller meals more often helps speed the metabolism up. I had a chicken fried steak sandwich and chips--not exactly healthy! lol

Date: 11/16/2012 10:03:00 AM
Andrea, your comment about an apple with not much water for breaky making you choke made me remember the cardinal rule of breakfast, MUST have protein... fruit itself does not get your metabolism going the way you want . I also have trouble swallowing food in the morning, if you throw some ( half a cup maybe) fruit in a blender with some ice ( 4 cubes) some water or soy milk and a scoop or two of protein powder you will be amazed at how full you feel but energized not sluggish and just as easy to take as a second cup of coffee. Then you can still have your other two normal meals and a couple small snacks ( almonds are highly recommended) and feel better and lose weight.

Charlotte, omelets can be very nice. I like mine with nice cheese melted inside. Onions and mushrooms are nice too.
Date: 11/16/2012 1:30:00 AM
I had a piece of stale bread wrapped round a bit of dried chicken, no time for butter or the niceties. As I was driving and trying to chew through this culinary delight, I gagged on it and threw it out for the birds. I noticed it was still there this morning. Must try what you said as obviously the pounds you are losing you are giving to me xx

you are funny. I'd gag too. Unfortunately I sometime gag on the "good" stuff. Sometimes when I eat early breakfast of apple with not much water, It gets stuck in my throat and I have to gag it out or I feel like I'm gonna die. Did that ever happen to you?
Date: 11/15/2012 9:03:00 PM
Thanks for the tips, Andrea. I'll have to try them. I've got to start eating better and get some of these extra pounds off.

I just love curry, Kash. Do you use it in the rice? For gaining weight, here is what you do. Just become a woman and turn 50!

My daughter and I treated ourselves to lunch out today at a local pub, I had the homemade quiche(bacon, tomato and cheese), she had the chicken burger plain. We have both been dieting for months now and the biggest change we made was breakfast, we never used to eat it, now we usually start our day with a protein shake with some sort of fruit in it and the rest of the diet is very like yours ( dr. Mark Hymen's diet). Then we went for a walk.

the mini tacos are very good, PD, but way too small! you can eat them in one bite. Do you have Smiths' grocery store in Texas. I love their deli food. You don't like tuna salad? It's my favorite subway sandwich too. Love pizza. I don't dare eat it often because pizza for me is like eating Lays. Once you start, you can't STOP.
Date: 11/15/2012 4:40:00 PM
you guys are funny!!! hmmm, I like Frank's lunch but not Ruben's. Ruben, yours would be better for a dinner meal!!! haha ( I do my guilty pleasures at lunch time now) Oh, and another good thing. If you take this way of eating very seriously during the week, you can cheat on weekends and eat normal dinners and get away with it.
