Dawn's Finger

Written by: Caleb Smith

I watched the dawn unfold in a sheet
Of gray cloud that shadowed my feet

All around the woods were in wait
To wake from slumber of sleeping's cold fate

I saw them reach for day's hidden light
Through dark mist that went past my sight

It seemed I had given the day to the shade
Impatiently changing the plans I had made

Until the old oak said, "Look to the sky!"
And laughed as dawn's finger stabbed my young eye
