The Polite Ground Hog

Written by: Gwendolen Rix

While nestled in my backyard hammock

and reading a gardening book

A ground hog peered from under my fence

and decided to take a look

Locking eyes on my vegetable garden

and then on my old tool shed

next her eyes were fixed on me

followed by a look of dread

She said she was sorry for intruding

and seemed worn from the heat

I invited her over to my patio table

and offered some peppermint iced tea

“I’m so sorry for this intrusion, m’am”

“your herbal tea tasted great!”

As she wobbled across my lush green lawn

she exited through the rear gate.
