The Devil's Dance

Written by: Samia Ali Arroyo

Each morning when I first awake.
To start my day of work.
I find myself pulled slowly back.
I almost feel his smirk.

The devil’s up before the sun.
And he won’t miss a chance.
It’s when we start our daily waltz.
The devil loves to dance.

I shake him off and soon I’m up.
And getting on my way.
But I am always on the watch.
For evil loves to play.

When I'm driving to my job.
We cha-cha once again.
With many drivers cutting in.
He’s lurking inside men.

Later, while I’m on the phone.
The horrid words I hear.
Intimidating, for they’re meant.
To make me hate and fear.

But then I think and bite my tongue.
For he won’t bring me down.
To the place where evil dwells.
And misery abounds.

Even at the grocery store.
His tango is the sign.
Those who step in front of me.
And try to break the line.

But I am stronger than he is.
So when he thinks he’s won.
I find the words to be polite.
And ruin all his fun.

Now, each day I’m careful.
To be aware of when.
The devil tries to take my hand.
And start to dance again.
