Sounds Of Distant Bird Calls

Written by: Richard Bates

        ...lying around...

there's things I could do, but why do them?
...stretched out in the emptiness of the mind,
letting the sounds of distant bird calls
carry the seconds passed...
....between naps where I stay awake
and my pen moving across the page...

      ...I went running...

      ...took a shower...

...more lively but back in bed...
...checking the phone too often for connects...
staring at this poem like its supposed to deliver me
to anything better than this vacant stillness...
...Still, I am relaxed in before all the "would do's" and
"could do's" ..."whens".... and "how's"...

I was always told that this is unhealthy...
...but its the only place I find comfort
...for now...
