Warmth In the Cold

A little boy was walking down,
The streets of town one night.
When from afar, he saw a man,
So strange to have caught his sight.

The man was singing to himself,
As he shivered in the cold.
With ragged clothes, shoeless feet,
And a worn out face– quite old.

The boy then asked of why he sang,
As he joined him in the storm.
The man then smiled and simply replied,
"It is something that can keep me warm."

Then, the boy asked of why he smiled,
On such a gloomy, dreadful day.
The man had laughed, and finally said,
"For I am blessed in my very own way!"

"Now, why does this man laugh with joy?"
The child thought to himself, confused.
"Why does he seem to not have much,
Yet with life, he is still amused?"

The man replied, "For we exist in this world,
That, itself, is a reason to smile.
Appreciating all the blessings you have,
Helps make life worth all the while."

Then, the man noticed the boy was cold,
For his hands, as they spoke, would shake.
So he reached into his worn down pocket,
Handing money for the child to take.

"Sorry if this is not much,
But it's all the money I hold.
Go buy yourself a pair of gloves,
To stay warm in the winter cold."

At that moment, it was clear to the boy:
The man was rich in a different way.
Such wealth is shared with many more,
In the things one can do or say.

A month had passed, and the boy returned,
To the bench where the old man would sing.
Hands and hearts were warm with love,
As winter had turned to spring.

The boy then thanked him for his kindness,
As time had lapsed and both would part.
The man had not just warmed his hands,
He also warmed his heart.
