How did we come so far?
How did we come so far?
Just to become two hearts estranged
From that they both love best?
What dark shadow faded into view
That obscured the vision of the other?
The one we thought most blessed
Our days and nights
And gave beauty, guidance and vision
As we sought our way,
And “alone” was just some other word,
One we would never have need to know.
How did this come to be?
What thoughtless consummation gave birth to this?
Cannot that fertile bed
That brought so much into this world for us
Not now bring forth comfort and forgiveness,
To each
For each
As promised so long ago?
To find peace and joy
Within the solitude of the other.
Why art thou so far from me?
And me from thee?
How did we come so far?
