Little Sparrow (Penny's Poem)

little sparrow
my birdwatching days
transfixed by you
distilled inside your struggles

how many years
how many cages
fluttered against?
or sitting docile
and neglected
allowed the clipping of a wing?

these things
these people
little sparrow
have not escaped me

I know your courage
by the banging
of your tiny chest
against my palm
where you rested

I know your eagle wings
your hawk eye
have seen the bent
and arc of your flight
your peregrine speed

little sparrow
I know your majestry
your darting artful passage
in your wake the angels
dull and earthbound.
