If you saw the horror

If you saw the horror

If you in your life once saw
A man’s head filled with maggots
Intestines screaming out at you
And smelling such a lot
And seen the horror on his face
Though he be the enemy
Then you’d look at war my friends
And feel the same as me.

I carried him within my arms
This enemy so fierce
He died before my eyes, you know!
Into my heart it pierced
[This horror that be war my friends
The ugliness of it!!!!]
Although he was the enemy
It hurt me quite a bit.

For he was just a human being
Leaving folk who loved him
To die in so much misery
I saw his eyes go dim
And my heart went out to him
For he too, I had killed
I did not fire the blessed missile
Yet guilty I was still!!!.

Thank you Chuck, I will always write about the stupidity of war, I hate it. If you get a moment read my poem 'Be careful what you wish for' It is right at the beginning of my poems and tells about a friend I once had who was a victim of war...I appreciate all your comments my frend....peter

I could not imagine the horror that has been seen in times of war. But, I can visualize it when reading this poem, and I hope that war becomes nonexistent, someday. Nothing good will ever come out of fighting for no reason. This poem is very well expressed, Peter. Great work!

Thank you Kelly, this is my wish too. I play my part by trying to rid myself of the way that goes on within. The only way to change the world is by changing oneself. Then each of us may be a light for others. Once again I appreciate your comments, my friend....peter

We are all guilty Peter of something be it patriotism or xenophobia. As one review said you are not guilty but the peers who send us to these conflicts to feed their greed. Well written piece about the horror that is war. My Mum said when someone died in the troubles in Ireland "he's some mothers son" and thats the truth a mother somewhere is grieving.

I can only imagine what that must feel like Peter. A hard hitting emotional write to read. Really brings home the horrors of war. Pete.

dear Peter, you were not guilty. The guilt lies in our leaders who do not care about us or what they are doing to our world. This is so sad and touching. One that speaks volumes about the horror of war.

The trouble is Andrea they take kids into the army who mostly want adventure, and who have not the wisdom to think. That war in Vietnam was very stupid, but what did I know about it as a mere boy. I appreciate your comments my friend....Peter
