UNHOLY

As though this wind tunnels below skin,
as though grey has filtered the palette of inner horizon,
winter has whipped me into trembling submission

The cold rolls off my now clipped tongue,
numbs more than ravaged fingertips,
lunges for the heart,
enters even there

A toll of bitter frost,
no calm here, no pretty postcard scene,
no silent night, no jingle bells,
no boughs of holly, no lights, no angels,
only a hoary grip

There are tears in my eyes,
cracks on my bloodless lips,
a chill settles low on shell-shocked hips
and roughens tender thighs

Feet and thoughts slip on black ice,
pellets pelt both mood and face
a thousand shades of lifeless stone have savagely encased
what was verdant, what once grew within

Curse this month
and just let the damned thaw begin

Hi Cyndi- cracks on my bloodless lips. Will spring come? Seems like it always has before, but the fear obscures the hope. I just now found the home page. What a dunce. love, Kathy
