The Promise

A simple promise
I believed
Held onto
Waited for
Dreamed of the day
Wanting
Needing to spend time with you

The day came
Where were you?
Did you know I waited?
Why did you promise?
Was it a game?
A cruel joke?
You said you could hardly wait
You were counting the days
You wouldn't miss it for the world

When I saw you again
You smiled
Talked to me
Laughed
Asked me how it was going
You did not see
My heart was broken
Just like your promise

I smiled
Pretended everything was okay
I tried to Block out that day
Yet it would not go away
I wanted you to hear what I had to say
Why
Why
Did I keep it inside
The broken part
that thought you lied

Inspired by Mystic Rose's Pomise Haiku.

Feelings of betrayal bloom in the silence when we will not allow ourselves to speak. But your pen speaks so eloquently and we are all richer for being able to read them.

This riled up some old memories. Poignant & tangled emotions. This is what happens when things are left unsaid...excellent job.

Yes, indeed. Why did you keep it inside? You should have told me (lol). Just joking, my friend. Entertaining poetry, Richard. I enjoyed reading this one. Licia :-)

Broken promises bring nothing but heartache..On purpose or unintented...Silence can be golden or it could kill us slowly..A heartfelt post Richard.Very profound.I will visit Mystic s post later .

A good perspective poem, great emotions and hurt yet some words needs to be adjusted, like the last line - The broken part That thinks you lied - I think the instead of that will be appropriate.
