The Monitor and The Merrimack

Iron clad vessels in heated exchange
Fired their volleys at close range
Impregnably armored they inevitably
Reached a stalemate eventually

Their Civil War fate and destiny:
One was scuttled;
One was lost at sea

note:
The Confederate vessel the Merrimack as an ironclad vessel was renamed the Virginia

    I learned that the USS Monitor was sunk during a hurricane shortly after the battle at Hampton Roads, Virginia. At the Ocean One mall which used to be on the Atlantic City boardwalk, there was a map of famous (or infamous) ships that sank off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America. Interesting write.

    Yes, The monitor was listed as lost at sea during the civil war. The Virginia was destroyed by the Confederates so that it wouldn't fall into enemy hands. I think I saw the monitor at the naval museum in Washington DC. But that's was a long time ago.

    A nice rhyme around a bit of history of which I was unaware (being Aussie, only the basics of the Civil War was studied). I enjoyed the rhyme :)
