Anorexic Mind

What is this ticking inside of me,
a heart that beats lesser than time?

I feel as though I have departed
into the halls of my own death,
life is but an echo
of footsteps fading
behind my back.

Am I too fat on life,
this trimming of me
is it to rid all but death?

I look into my own reflection
and see the fullness of years
laughing back, as if I was a joke,
yet I am a mere skeleton
of what I once was.

Is it an anorexic mind
trying to shed my own flesh
and spread me into ashless dust?

I was catholic, once
but parted to become something else,
is it that part of me, undernourished,
that feels the rest of me should starve?

Has something died and left me
only to masquerade as a life
where my own existence
is just a shadow cast
upon the ground?

What is this ticking inside of me,
a heart that beats lesser than time?

Great writing, as usual. You never disappoint me with your talent and creativity. I touched on looking back using a lighter mood in "Reachin' Back In Time." You'll find it in my portfolio.... I hope you like it..... Jake

Wow Sandra, this is so superbly expressed. So many layers to ponder when we take a look back in time. I've struggled with the ups and downs of self image from time to time. It can be so self-destructive. Love this one!

Intrestingly society does not make women Anorexic, scientists have determined that sufferers have a genetic predisposition to the disorder. Usually some life event triggers the disorder. Starvation syndrome hampers the brains ability to think logically and that is why it takes a multidisciplinary approach to help people recover from this most challenging of mental disorders.

thank you Richard...I know so many women who feel fat...I was always thin and at times feel fat and have cut calories too low...my sister has done the opposite with binge eating, and then purging...my one cousin has always yo-yoed her weight, the rest don't seem to care...I also have friends that have gone to extremes with the calorie cutting until the point of having health issues or the eating and purging...I generally try and offer advice...because there was a time when I was there....and I don't keep scales around for one reason...fear of taking that road again...

The "ticking" seems to be a tap on your eyes to look into its roots and feed it some sun & rain. This was a tremendous piece.
