Ain' No Such Word

         Ain’t No Such Word

Do you love the English language?
That uses words such as ain’t
Placed in a sentence, like a sandwich
Of the word, I’ve no complaint

There be those who will not use it
No such word as ain’t, they say
But this belief, I do refuse it
And always say it anyway

They say it sounds so uncouth
Ill-educated, don’t you know
That may not be, far from the truth
But somehow, ain’t, has such a flow

If you speak with plums in gob
Then usage sure ain’t gonna happen
It ain’t for me your words to rob
And ain’t for you my words to flatten

In the garden of our language
Ain’t, be no more than a weed
Perfectionists, release your bondage
This flowers bursting to be freed.

I’ve fought the corner of this little word for years,
Been rebuked a thousand times, mind you,
999 of those were on purpose lol

Oh yes I like this one! You know here in the South I'm pretty sure intellectuals have given up on ridding the area of the word "ain't" or any variation thereof lol. And I REALLY enjoyed reading the comments you inspired; OMGoodness you've even gotten Demetrios to say "ain't" lol!

WOW Thank you Rick, I'm truly moved by your words here, as I am by those you write in your poems. There so many great writers in this soup, I feel privileged to have the oppotunity to read and say a few words to them.

I teach my ESL students this word, Richard. It IS a convenient way to use the negative of the verb BE in all persons!!!

Cool poem, my friend. I especially like your last stanza. Mmmm, me likes the gardener in you, green-fingered one. I ambled around in my own garden earlier with watering cans and whatnot. I enjoyed it but I'm spent now. I guess I'll just have to get a sprinkler to keep the soil moist. Licia ( ^__* )
