Poet's Notes About The Poem
(Show Details...)

A paramour is a lover, and perhaps even an illicit one. This is a poem about a love, a platonic love, that developed over 20 years between two people. Both having lived several lives of marriages, children, heart breaks, even living vast distances from each other. Nevertheless a connection was never lost, with sometimes months in between meetings. Every meeting was imbued with tenderness, bodies warming each other on cold nights and never more than that. Until a meeting most recently where not a word was said until the lovers lay naked, spent with incredulous wonder in their eyes. A moment had occurred that neither had envisaged consciously, as if a parallel universe had opened up to them. Still living a vast distance from each other universes have to be crossed for them to continue, the conflict being that one lives in hope and the other divided between two loves. The paramour no more a paramour because the latter lives in a universe so vastly different from the hermit paramour that perhaps this time their meetings must end.

My Paramour

There is always a light, sometimes a tiny glimmer expanding
Amongst the darkest forest as a fiery wheel of hope and desire
It measures the life of many years of tasting moments so far and few
The first full bite filled with momentous prurience leaving a tender
Taste reminiscent of briny afternoons and glistening bodies
On a hot summer afternoon at the edge of a water hole

Tender hands gliding up and down smooth skin dispersing
Guiding rivulets amongst the valleys and dell a secret hollow
Too far a reach; for the adventurer has love in his heart not lust
And as moons and suns are born and reborn the water recedes
Forests are felled, but one strong sapling a nexus between
The moments to bring forth the final moment the momentous moment

The nexus by no means a linear thing, time curving as if blown
By a wind filled with sounds of ghosts and angels, gently abrading
What seems like mountains into stones, into dust, into a gentle breeze
Drying tears, reviving a hermit heart, filling lungs with perfumed air
My paramour, no more a paramour but so much more, so much more

Illicit afternoons that promise so much more... Sad, yet strangely uplifting. Wonderful, loved it.

Thank you mystic rose. It is a true story of a friend of twenty years when recently we experienced that moment. Yet after continued as friends with a much deeper connection, yet never to spend our lives together.
