Nothing the Same Anymore

NOTHING! THE SAME ANYMORE?

I remember that place
in green pastures called home.
But where are you now
“Union Yard, Britton Holm”
Deep in reams of memories
indelible you lay,
reposed at the helm
of a life rushing by.

Guess i’ve played life’s
generation game,
yet somehow you appeared the same!
Misguided my mind
in local pursuit,
when reminded
one does not belong,
the only stranger there was i.

Sometimes I try to tell myself
that life yesteryear was never real,
just a fantasy of one’s youth
the way I use to feel.
“But you are so astute”
No one to change nature’s way
when every step together we retraced,
“Only the human race it seems fluctuates.”

From time to time
the dream awakes, then swiftly abates,
even the memories seem to fall
like autumn leaves
that swirls within the gutter,
when I see urbanization,
spread its wing
like some gigantic woodcutter!

Alas no more the sight
no more the sound
no more the light,
in this life to be found
in that foundation called home,
the last bastion of my folks,
only a memory of love
and a mind at will to evoke!

I grew up in the country at the edge of the suburbs... now it's built up City... Sigh! But I'm no the same any more either... The memories are precious for as long as I can keep them, but layered with new ones, too. Great write... My favorite memories were at my Grandma's tho since Mom is gone... Those have become way more precious, too. Very stirring poem.

Good morning Harry, I don't know much about places changing faces. I've lived in the same town for over 13 years. Little does it grow.. But, somehow your poem has me missing the old country place.. by the way I like the imagery in this line... ---.> even the memories seem to fall like autumn leaves"" thank you... always LINDA

Life is not easy for all and circumstances compel to think ahead to have the better solution of life but even after sacrificing everything of life, certain things are there which remain unsolved. Then a feeling of unchanged picture is seen in frustration. Excellently done, my sweet friend. Loved always, bl

This is a special poem most of us can relate to Harry...I am very fortunate ..my folks still live in the same house I grew up in in the same small town..where nothing ever changes, but I know how I'd feel if it did...raw feelings here....

This breaks my heart in the way that touches that personal place I have felt myself.........when they used to tell me "you can't go home again"....I didn't believe it was true......but it is so often the case. Time changes what used to be. But nothing can change our memories...hang on to the memories, Harry. That is what I often write about. :) Lovely poem!

Beautiful and sad piece Harry...The house I grew up in has been torn down but forever remains in my memory...This gem reminds me of Joni Mitchell's great song 'They paved paradise and put in a parking lot' - Tim

Harry, I grew up in Tehran, Iran...at the foot of the Elbrus mountain range, in a BEAUTIFUL compound that had a swimming pool, and every fruit tree you could imagine...My childhood was....a dream. We left in 78 and visited a year later before the revolution when I was 11...NEVER been back. Why? I don't want my childhood memories to fade....I lived in paradise...now???? :( BEAUTIFUL write...I feel with you....life changes...places change...if people don't change, we are blessed! Hugs!
