Last Night I Dreamt

Last night I dreamt
That the world was all at rest
From vice exempt
Filled with songs of mortals blessed
(Refrain)
And we waltzed to the strains of a song
'Neath the arbour of love and repose
Glad in heart at the absence of wrong
'Mid the lilacs and hedges of rose

Last night I dreamt
That I danced the night away
In some attempt
To hold back the morning's gray
(Refrain)
And we waltzed to the strains of a song
'Neath the arbour of love and repose
Glad in heart at the absence of wrong
'Mid the lilacs and hedges of rose

Last night I dreamt
Of an arbour filled with light
And then I wept
When it vanished from my sight
(Refrain)
And I've naught but a memory dear
Of the dresses of silk and brocade
Of the moon and the stars shining clear
And the fond wish that I could have stayed

I can relate well to this poem, especially the last line. I seem to always regret leaving a situation, before I should have. Because, I learn later that I had missed something special. But, I'm not psychic, so I had no way of knowing. Very well done! I will try to be more critical in the future, but it's not something that I'm good at!

May be this could be sung to the tune of B minor or some tune found only in a dream!

You were definitely a romantic in another century--thanks for bringing it to life in your poems--much magic!

Also, that's such a funny coincidence that you came across "Goblin Market" after I mentioned it. I studied that poem in my Children's Lit class in university. It used to be a kind of warning story for children. As for the other Rossetti, I bet you are thinking of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He was a painter and Christina Rossetti was his sister :)

Here goes... John Keats ("The Eve of St. Agnes" and "Ode to a Nightingale" to get you started), William Wordsworth, William Blake, Lord Alfred Tennyson ("The Lady of Shalott" in particular), Irving Layton, Dylan Thomas ("Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night")... And I consider John Lennon to be one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, even though he's technically considered a musician. "Across the Universe" is my favourite song (poem) of all time.

Beautiful lyrics, Isaiah. I especially loved the line about the lilacs. They're my favourite flower/tree. With regards to your question about poetry recommendations... Honestly, my taste is very eclectic (aka a bit all over the place). How about I give you a list of my favourite poets and you can decide whether they are truly great?
