Scarborough Lass

Sat with a buttercup and a daisy chain
Tears from my eyes hidden by the rain
I had pledged my love to the girl up the road
Elizabeth to whom I wished I was betrothed

We had to move and leave the town
It left me sad, wearing a frown
To leave her behind was like the end of my life
Though I promised I would come back and make her my wife

She said I would meet someone new
I laughed and told her that it was not true
I’d fight to keep her in my heart
Not distance nor time would ever keep us apart

As the truck pulled away with our home inside
She waved and as she disappeared I cried
But deep inside I knew the years would pass
Then I would return for this Scarborough lass

Alas they passed and I seemed to forget
Sometimes a small tinge of regret
This lass who I thought was sent from heaven
Meant the world to me when I was seven
