A Dose of Humility

He beat upon his breast
As he fell to the ground
Mumbled words escaping
Heart's pain formed into sound

“Please…Forgive me, oh Lord
I am so full of sin
This wretched game of life
Alone…I cannot win

I’ve cheated; I’ve lusted
I’ve inflicted abuse
Dear God…I clearly see
To you…I’m of no use

“Forgive... God…oh, forgive…”
His beard soaked up his tears
As gut wrenching sob
Gave voice to all his fears

The “righteous” man just watched
His pride filling the place
“I thank God, heaven’s light
Is shining on MY face.

Lord, you know my good deeds
I help the poor needy
I gladly give my tithe
For Lord, I’m not greedy

Oh Lord, I’m not like him
That poor man on his knees
I’m glad I can stand tall
For I live YOU to please.”

On that sinner not “saint”
The good Lord’s blessing fell
He needed a Savior
To taste heaven not hell

The other felt holy
Justified in his eyes
But the Bible is clear
He was deluded with lies

A lesson comes to us
About the sin of pride
For those who are humble
Have a place by God’s side

Be gracious and giving
Remember your true place
It’s the humble of heart
Who will see God’s dear face.

I enjoyed reading this valuables lesson again. It is important to not rest on our own deeds but rather on the gift of salvation.

This is splendid, Eileen. I wrote one yesterday about self-pride but didn't post it. Seems we're on the same wave-length for the moment..

Yes...it seems so, my dear. You know what they say about great minds, right? ;)

Fantastic allegory! It seems somewhat inspired by the story of the Good Samaritan. People with a deeply ingrained haughtiness (that they mistakenly call "holiness"). Those that believe will stumble, fall, and bleed countless times... believing doesn't give you perfection, but a guide to help you along the way.

Yes, Timothy....unfortunately, our righteousness is nothing but filthy rags! Good reality check. Hope all is well!

Great write Eileen, does raise a question in my mind. What if say someone falls between the two you describe here, what happens to them? Take care, Richard
